So many different times in my life, I’ve played with broken or hurt things, broken foot, broken leg, broken hand, broken arm, broken sternum, broken collarbone. I could keep going if I just thought more about bones. Why, man? Because I loved it. I loved playing the game. I was passionate about it. One of the reasons I even get encouraged at seeing all of you here, you know why I get encouraged by that is because you could be anywhere doing a lot of different things, but you chose to be here Some shows don’t need a celebrity narrator to introduce the show But this show does in a world filled with endless opportunities Why would two men who have built 13 multi-million dollar businesses? five hours per day to teach you the best practice business systems and moves that you can use. Because they believe in you. And they have a lot of time on their hands. This started from the bottom, now they’re here. It’s the Thrive Time Show starring the former U.S. Small Business Administration’s Entrepreneur of the Year, Clay Clark, and the entrepreneur trapped inside an optometrist’s body. Dr. Robert Zulman. Two men, eight kids, co-created by two different women. Thirteen multi-million dollar businesses. We started from the bottom, now we’re here. We started from the bottom, and we’ll show you how to get here. Started from the bottom, now we’re here. We started from the bottom, now we’re here. We started from the bottom, and now we’re at the top Teaching you the systems to get what we got Colton Dixon’s on the hoops, I break down the books Z’s bringing some wisdom and the good looks As a father of five, that’s why I’m alive So if you see my wife and kids, please tell them hi It’s the CNC, up on your radio And now, 3, 2, 1, here we go! Started from the bottom, now we’re here Started from the bottom, let me show you how to get this Well, some things are going to go over real quick here, okay? Okay, this is gonna be huge for you. You might want to replace that apple with a pen and a piece of paper, or you know, or you can cut yourself in right with blood, whatever you have to do. Okay, here we go. So this is called the cash flow quadrant. The cash flow quadrant. I don’t recommend you do that. That’s just something that, if you’re really serious. This is called the cash flow quadrant. Okay? Cash flow what? Quadrant. Cool. Alright. Now here’s the thing. Most people have no idea what this thing is. Okay? Cash flow quadrant. Okay? But yet, it doesn’t matter what study that you guys read here, you’re going to discover that most Americans do not ever get out of the rat race. What is the rat race? What is the rat race, guys? What’s that? Okay, that eight to five, that eight to five, what else is that rat race? Give it to me, come on, explain it to me. You got the mortgage, you got that mortgage thing going on, you got that mortgage going on, what else do we have here, what else? That car payment, that house payment, that kind of check to check sort of thing. Okay, so let me ask you, somebody here who’s really smart, somebody here who’s really, really smart. Who here, that’s your goal right now? Your goal is like, I want to hop into that rat race, I want to stay in that, I want to get a sweet mortgage as soon as possible. I’ve come all the way from South Africa to get this car payment. I’m not coming back. No, no. I have got to get that mortgage. I’m going to go check the check. I hope to work at a middle, I want to be mid-management at a job that I don’t even care about. Because in our country, no matter what study you look at, about 50% of people know likey their job and over 90% of humans cannot retire. They actually have a negative net worth. How many of you have no debt other than student loans? That means that people after working their entire life have less money than you have now. Okay? So there’s nobody decided that they wanted to do this. I don’t think anybody has said, that’s what I’m going to do. So why is it that everybody, 90% of people, look around, look around, look around, point at everybody except for you, because you’re the only one who’s not going to do this, right? So why is it everybody in this room with an exception of one out of ten, in our group of eight, that means it’s statistically probable that maybe none of you would have this success, right? Only one out of ten, right? Why is it that everybody just goes down the same path? What is the deal? So let’s look at the two paths. Let’s compare them, okay? This is path number one. You have the employee, right? Self-employed, business owner, investor. This is the good path. One, two, three, four. This is the path. Okay, this is what you want to do. Employee, self-employed, business owner, investor, right? Now, the other path, the one that almost everybody goes down, let’s talk about. What do you do first? You become an employee, right? Then you get a little more debt, keep going, then what happens? You get laid off, right? Who knows somebody who went through this story? Who knows this story? Okay, and then this keeps happening and then you die, all right? So we don’t want to do that, right? So we have to look at this. So first off, as an employee, how do you get promoted out of your job? Being totally real, totally biased, totally like, why does he say those kinds of things? I’m just telling you I care. Right now, I am on the verge of wanting to hire Ms. Heard, but I’ve already been convinced that I would hire Joseph without an interview. Right? So what is it? How do you get to where an employer, because I don’t have a bias, I came in here, I mean, I’m certainly not hiring them because we’re the same race, I’m not like, well, we’re going to look for a fellow Caucasian here, that’s what I’m looking for. No, I didn’t come in here looking for somebody, I share the same religious views, I haven’t talked to you about it, didn’t talk to you about politics. But why is it that everybody in the world except for that rare human that goes down this path. This is only 10% of people do this. 90% why is that? You’ve heard people say, what’s just political at work? Who’s heard someone say, it’s just political. I don’t care if I’m in business. What’s the goal of my business to make money. I don’t care about politics. I don’t care what skin color he is, I don’t care about your religion, I don’t care. I am just here to make money by offering value to customers. So what happens is, people will go to work, so when you work eight to five, now some of you who believe in a higher power and some of you don’t, I’m not gonna get into it with you, but is it possible that there’s a camera in the great sky watching and or a camera in this room? Cool, so I’ll give you an example. In my office the other day, I made a statement to a young man. I said, hey, I want you to know, since we’ve installed the new cameras, we need to have a conversation. And you could see the whole like, oh, and you know, now here’s the deal. I hadn’t turned him on yet in his area. I just wanted to see because I suspected there was some stuff going on. He’s like, now I had the same conversation with another guy. He’s like, well, cool. You get to see who shows up first. Right. So if you work eight to five and you’re the last person at work and you’re the first person to go home Will the boss want to promote you? What if like you’re coachable and you say man I want to be coached I want to be improved Well the boss want to promote you Right. Well the boss want to promote you if you do just enough to get by Well, the boss want to promote you if you do more than you’re supposed to do and ask for more? Right, okay. So that’s the big thing. I want to make sure when you step one here, we all start off as an employee. Step one, I want you to write this down. That’s all you have to do. All you have to do is over deliver and then you will eventually be what? Over paid. Cool. All you need to do is over deliver and you’ll eventually be over paid. Cool. So if you’re if you’re over delivering, you’ll be overpaid, right? That make sense? So I’m just being real. I have already, who here have I already paid more money to than I was supposed to? I think you, right? No one made me do it. I did it because I wanted to. Who else did I pay? Someone else I paid you? Okay. And right now you’re on the verge of, if nothing changes and it can change, I hope it does change because we don’t want Joseph to win. He’s getting a little too cocky. We want to keep him down, hold him down, someone unplug his phone. But here’s the thing is, he’s potentially going to get another $250 because of the bonus. So it starts off, you over-deliver, you overpaid. Now here’s the next fork in the road. You start to get some money coming in the bank. And you have this thing called assets, and you have this thing called liabilities. Can somebody tell me what an asset is? Things that make you money. Once you write that down, change your definition. If you read it in the classroom, it’s wrong. Okay, it’s stuff that makes you money. Okay, an asset is something that makes you money, makes you what? So now with that definition in mind, is a car an asset? Not unless you’re a taxi driver, right? Make sense? Is a house an asset? Not unless it’s a rental house or a house you can sell for more than you bought it for. Make sense? So what’s a liability? What is a liability? Something that costs you what? OK. Liability costs you money. OK. So it costs you what, guys? OK. So the key is, once you start making money, to take that money and to buy what with it? There you go. Does anyone do this? No. No one does this. So what’s an asset you could buy if you had a thousand dollars? Somebody, talk to me. Something that makes you money. What if you bought a pop machine? What if you have a friend who owns a salon and you bought a pop machine, put it in there. Boom. Cool? What if you bought stocks of a company that you felt confident in, like a Google stock. What if you took that money and you set it aside and you did something really crazy, which you need to do, by the way, in order to get out of the rat race, you want to start your own business. So in college, what I did is I started making t-shirts. A lot of you guys are in dorms, you’re in wings, and everyone needs a t-shirt for their dorm, right? Everyone has an end of the year, what, end of the year banquet. I’m like, man, I’m going to make all the t-shirts for the events, all the intramurals, and I’m going to have a DJ company, and we’re going to DJ for their banquets. So how do you start a business? You have to look for somebody who has a problem, and you have to solve it. Make sense? That’s all you’re doing. So you might be able to find somebody who’s a business owner and say, hey, I’ll do your books for you. That’s a business. I’ll do your books. I’m a graduate from ORU. I want to do your quick books for you. I’m a trustworthy dude. You can do that. You could have a pop machine, you could have a anything you can think of, but you need to buy what? Assets and not buy. But at some point, somebody will tell you probably a salesperson at a car lot, hey, that’s cars of best investment that you can make. And then you find yourself getting in what? Debt. So once you’re in debt, let’s just be real here. Once you buy the car, and once you buy the house, what happens to you? Now you have less what? Less free… freedom. Why? Because you have to make payments. Uh oh. So now you can’t become self-employed because now you’re afraid to fail. Does that make sense? So your goal is to stay free. Does that make sense? A lot of us, you know, are not enslaved in theory anymore. Maybe our RA might feel like he’s a slave driver, but the point is we’re free, right? But yet we jump into the bondage of debt as soon as possible if we’re not careful. Okay? So step one is we’re an employee who over what? Over deliver. And then two, we want to become a self-employed person because we bought some assets and we did not buy… Right, okay. So now in theory if you have assets that make you money, let’s just say you have a pop machine and you have a t-shirt making machine, which I had in college You can buy these things for a few thousand bucks. Then you start having some extra money, right? So with that extra money you need to do the next thing which is to become a business owner and not self-employed What’s the difference the business owner has an employee? who works with Right make sense. So when you go here you go from me to we. That’s how you become a business owner. Cool? Now some of you are like, I just want to work for someone else. That’s totally cool. Nothing wrong with that, okay? But I’m just trying to explain to you, like, this is the path to like, get out of the cycle of debt and stuff. Now what if you work for a company? Is it possible for you to take your money and invest in the company you work for? I would argue the only companies that you guys should stick with are the companies that you could eventually invest in or you somehow benefit based upon their success There’s very few stories about the world’s wealthiest people where they’re like what I did is I took a job at a college I bought a car bought a house stayed at the bank for 40 years and now I’m rich, right? Almost all the stories are somebody who started working hard found a problem to solve it Invested in assets started a business and the final one is an investor, which is where you take your money and you invest in the next wave of entrepreneurs who you think have a chance and you make money that way. Does that make sense? Now, there’s a book that I recommend all you guys read and it’s called Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Okay, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I’m sorry I write in Spanglish. I read Rich Dad, Bad Writer. That was the book that I read. Okay, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. The author’s name is Kiyosaki. Now, is this stuff taught very much? Have you had any classes yet about this? You had one? Boom! Okay, amen. I’m glad there’s one. Okay, so you’re gonna hear a lot about papyrus and Mesopotamia and like, you know, the Egyptians and the Romans and cuneiform. Who’s been studying some cuneiform and papyrus and reeds and, you know, all that. That’s great, but then ultimately, like, how do we get out of the rat race? Oh, we don’t have a class for that. So you need to make sure that you learn this, okay, because it’s really important that you get it. Now, Rich Dad Pornhub is the book where it’s at, but the biggest thing you need to know right now, and I’m not trying to hurt anybody’s feelings here, but I’m saying your goal for your own selfish reasons should be to try to wow me to the point that I want to write you a letter of recommendation. The biggest thing to get, the biggest way to get what you want is to give me what I want in huge proportions. Does that make sense? So you have to give before you receive, right? Give before you receive, right? But some people are like, well, I’m just gonna mail it in because I don’t like this job. Well, you’re gonna be stuck with that job forever. Make sense? So if you’re washing dishes, wash the heck out of those dishes. So the boss is like, I got to promote you. If you’re in a call center, I don’t know about you, I usually am not like, thank you Lord, I’ve always wanted to be in a call center on my break. No, right? But you got to over deliver, and that’s how you get overpaid. Does that make sense? We have to start there. We have that very principle of sowing and reaping. If it’s not there, we don’t get, we get kind of stuck there, okay? Does that make sense to you guys does anyone have any questions about that why is it if we if it seems so common sense that we should over deliver why is it that most of us are obsessed obsessed with looking around and if the boss is not there we leave five minutes early why is it that if no one’s looking a lot of us will just leave a little bit early why is it that if the teacher’s not looking we might just copy the paper? Why is it that if? What is that all about? What causes that? What is it I would say it’s human nature and you have to fight that all the time don’t you it’s like an endless thing Are we really concrete? I don’t know. So what it all comes down to and I want to give this to you. Okay? This is the final nugget here. The people who are the most self-disciplined, these people require the least amount of discipline. You ever thought about that? So like, you know, Tim Duncan is an example of a guy. He’s an NBA player. You don’t see Tim Duncan getting a whole lot of technical fouls. It’s because of the general rule he doesn’t freak out a lot. Make sense? So the people who are the most disciplined are the people who require the least amount of discipline. Does that make sense? So it all starts with mastering what? Yourself. Does that make sense? So some of you are like, dude, I have no capital, I have no money. I can relate to you. I used to work at Target and Applebee’s while going to ORU. It was a glorious moment in American history. No, it wasn’t. But I had to do it. Right? But if I couldn’t figure out how to get to work on time and string two days together in a row of working hard, I could not have ever moved out of that position. So how long should you stay somewhere as an employee before you’re able to move into that? We have one guy who worked with me on this, a final capstone thought for you, an ORU student who worked with us a few years ago. His name was Nick. And Nick came to our business with I think about 20-something thousand of debt. I don’t want to get the number wrong, but he had 20-something thousand of debt. And he was like, I am paying that off. And Ariel’s film, you remember this guy, I don’t remember the exact number, but he had 20 something thousand dollars of debt. And so he says, I’m moving in with a roommate and then another roommate, and then I’m only gonna like wear a few various things and I’m gonna eat super cheap. Well, he paid off his, he’s that crazy guy paid off his student loan in like a year. But that’s cause he was focused on it. Now I know people right now who are 45, 46, who still haven’t paid it off. So I’m just trying to tell you, it’s up to you guys, right? If it’s to be, it’s up to me, sort of thing, you have to do that. And I want to encourage you guys that on this campaign, I’m not trying to sit there and say I don’t care about anybody else, but I just want to give you an example. I’ve seen Ms. Hurd have two or three outbursts of awesomeness. And so I’m watching you because I’m trying to catch you being awesome. Because, but it requires you just continuing to push, to push to the point where you’re not comfortable anymore. And I’ve seen Joseph kind of start here and push and push and push. And now his biggest thing I’m working with you on is trying to get you to share with the team and encourage other people. So that’s gonna push you, right? So I just wanna encourage you guys, we all can do this, but we have to decide right now we’re gonna over deliver, okay? So as we get on the phone here, I want to encourage you, you know what the script says. You know you need to build rapport. We know we need to find their needs. We know we need to give them benefits and we know we need to go for the close. But I’m just asking you, can you try to do it better than if I’m standing there watching? Can you try to wow? Because if I do, if you do wow me, you realize that when you hit me up via Facebook or email and say, Hey Mr. Clark, I’m trying to get a job at Williams or Level 3 or at this ministry, I’m looking for a letter of recommendation. You know that I will be forced, because I have a soul, to reciprocate, right? I will feel the need to do it, right? Now for some of you who are slacking as much as possible, trying to do the least amount of effort possible, when you ask me for one, I will be forced to say, no, right? So it’s up to you, right? That make sense? Why is that? I can appreciate that. It’s great. Okay, cool. So we’re gonna get started here. We’re gonna dial for an hour of power. It is now almost 7. So we’re gonna dial from now until 7.50. Okay, so 7.50, one hour of power. All right, one hour of power. We can do it. And no matter what we do, we have to beat Joseph. We want him leaving here humble. So whatever, give him the bad call lists, hang up on the phone when he’s on the phone with somebody, start screaming in the phone when he’s on the phone, whatever you have to do to take down his cell numbers. Okay, awesome. Clay, my bro, Saddamus, how are you, my friend? Dude, I am feeling it like a petting zoo right now. Whoa! Just feeling it like, like a, like a, like a. But you’re also kind of feeling, you’ve got a little back issue today? Yeah, backwards. Pulled my back, I feel like I might’ve, you had a partial kind of a, whoa, I feel like I dislocated my spine. I’ve heard that that is something you always want to avoid. Dislocate your shoulder, that’s nothing. Dislocate your spine. Something, I’ve done that, but I’ve never dislocated my spine. It probably just is my sleep. Yeah, that’s not it. OK, well. I like danger. I’ll let you know if we need to call a time out, and I’ll just jump on your back, and we’ll crack it. But for now, let’s just plunge on ahead. We’re talking about the power of the Y. OK, the power of the Y. And I don’t know if you guys can see this. This is beautiful what you’ve done here, little claymation drawings. It’s really motivated me to dive into this topic. Okay, I’m ready to do it. Power of the why, the size of your why will determine your attitude and the altitude at which you can fly. That’s what we’re talking about today. But Clay, why, I guess, as a broad perspective on this, why does this matter? Why does it matter to talk about the why? Because what happens is, is if you go to any job right now, if you go to any job at all and you’re at that job and you’re bringing intensity to it, you’re gonna be far more successful than someone who’s not doing it with intensity. So I’ll give you an example, okay? These are kind of the big thoughts you have. Over here, you have somebody who’s fighting with enthusiasm. Over here, you just have somebody who’s just physically present. Over here, so again, two fighters go into a fight. They’re boxers. One has enthusiasm, one’s just physically present. Pretty much always the enthusiastic, the guy who would win. Basketball, you watch a basketball player who’s very into it. The guy who’s got the enthusiasm will usually beat the guy who’s just physically present. People for some reason in business and in office and in work don’t do that. See that one graphic designer who’s enthusiastic and he’s really, really getting more done, achieving his goals. He’s just a better designer. He’s getting better. The person who’s just physically present is not. So how do you bring in… where does enthusiasm come from? I mean, where does enthusiasm… we’ve talked about this in a couple other episodes, but I want to hammer it. This word, theos, okay, that means God in Greek, okay, this is God. Well, in means it’s basically like it’s like having God within you. But what I have found is that people who have a God-like, and I don’t mean that in the most non-sacrilegious way possible, but they have a God-like level of enthusiasm, it’s almost like God is in them. They truly understand why they’re at work They understand why they’re at that job. They understand why they’re there people who understand why they’re there just Win, so what happens is rare I mean that is Forbes actually Forbes had an article where they featured a Gallup poll recently. It said 71% of all workers are not engaged or are actively disengaged. I mean, actively disengaged. But that’s so rare for somebody to have this enthusiasm. I’ll give you an example. I do speaking events all the time. And you and I go to those things. And we see people in the audience who are usually in the front, taking notes, wanting to be there. Those guys get a ton out of it. There’s speakers that speak before me and after me. There’s awesome workshop leaders that we’ve had the privilege to watch present. But there’s people who just don’t want to be there. But the people who want to be there and have decided that they’re at that particular conference to learn something. They know why they’re there. I mean, I have one guy who I talked to at that one we did in San Diego, and the gentleman comes up and he’s like, hey, if I can pick up two things, just two nuggets, it’s worth a thousand bucks I spent to be here. Because in his business, his business is already making millions, and he knows if he can just learn a couple more things it could change the trajectory of his business. So again to get enthusiasm you have to know your why and you can’t win without enthusiasm. So the next level you carry that over that equals winning but you’ve got to have the why. The why is that step one here that leads to enthusiasm this right here leads to winning because you’re like when you’re on fire you can you can use contagious you can create that enthusiasm wherever you go. And then you’ve not only got to have the why, which is kind of the vision, but then you got to actually execute to make that a reality. I know Thomas Edison says, vision without execution is just hallucination. And he’s the guy that had the vision of creating a light bulb maybe, and actually executed it, and failed 10,000 times. I mean, he’s a good guy to be speaking on that. A lot of people don’t realize, but Thomas Edison, if you think about the impact of that quote, because I’d like you to read it again in just a second, but the thing about Edison is that he is the man who invented the light bulb that we, you know, some people say he stole it from Tesla. Yeah. Let’s just say he made, he made the light bulb. Right. He’s also the first guy to do recorded sound. Right. Video. He did, yeah, first guy to do video. Right. So if you think about it, the one man did video, he did audio, and he did light. How different would our world be without video, audio, and light? I mean, this studio, if we turned the lights off, and we weren’t videoing, and we didn’t have any audio, it wouldn’t exist. I mean, Thomas Edison, we need to all be thankful for what he did. When you read his book, you read it again, I just want you to marinate it, because I don’t want to lose the importance of his book. Vision, vision without execution is just hallucination. Vision without execution is just hallucination. How many people before him came up with an idea, Hey, I would have been great if we could record audio. Yeah, but he did it. Yeah, and that was an interesting thought. You turn off the lights in here, you turn off the cameras. The episodes would be much shorter. You’d probably take a lot less from them if you had no audio, no cameras, and no lights. It would be short like when you’re watching a, you know, if you’re somebody who you kind of are planning an elaborate sort of a long-winded sort of a playoff run and you’re going, I’m going to plan to watch every game in the playoffs that my team plays. And if that team that you were cheering for was the Cowboys, that’s how short it would be. I might just leave now because he’s kind of attacking my personal character, but I’m gonna I’ve got the why in mind And I’m gonna keep pushing on here I got a we’re gonna talk about this is a little overview of what we’re gonna talk about okay, and as a whole We’re talking about the power of your why like I said and honestly We’re talking about the impact that your why has and how it actually affects how high you can apply How much you can accomplish in your life, okay? You’ve touched on why the why is so important, but let’s let’s dive on into it. Yeah, let’s do it. You ready? Yeah. OK. So Clay, I want to hear from you, though. Like, I guess, a fire hose of knowledge here. Fire hose of knowledge. Tell me about your work ethic, your old school work ethic at the Norseman. I know you’ve talked a little bit about the Norseman, kind of the dark ages there. In Dassel Cocado, the town I lived in was called Cocado. And there’s a highway called Highway 12. And Highway 12 ran kind of, this is, we’re going east to west, this is actually west, it’s running west. Okay. There used to be a gas station. Cocado did not have a stoplight at the time, the town I lived in. So it’s not exactly massive. 2,038 people lived in that town, that was on the sign. And there’s one restaurant that everyone came in called the Norseman. Norseman. And this restaurant here, you know, it’s kind of a Nordic theme restaurant. You go in there, the Norseman, and I would go in there. My job was to clean the bathrooms and to be the bus boy. There’s all these tables everywhere inside here, and my job was to keep all these tables clean and to be the bus boy and to keep the bathrooms clean. So my strategic area was here, here, and then walking around, cleaning the tables, bringing it back to the kitchen. This is what I had to do all day, every day. This is my job. But for whatever reason I couldn’t do it right. Why? I didn’t know my why. I was just there to make $6.25 an hour. So I would drift the whole day. I’d be like and he’d go, Clay get to work. What are you doing man? And I’m like, I’m sorry. He’d come by again. Clay, what are you working on? I’m like, I finished cleaning the bathroom and so I’m just hanging out. Clay, find something to do. Right. And I would never find something to do. If you don’t know your why, you’re always going to be unengaged from your job and therefore people are going to have to tell you what to do. But here’s the deal, if you can manage yourself, nobody else will ever, ever have to manage you again. So you’ve got two options. If you can manage yourself. Nobody will have to manage you again. So what you want to do is you want to learn self-management. And that just means that you work 100% of the time at work. I’m not asking you to bring homework home. I’m just talking about what if we could work 100% of the time we’re at work. I’ve got to be honest with you. I am not going to ESPN.com at work. I am not screwing around. I’m not going out for extended lunches. I am working when I’m at work. And then when you’re at home, if you want to be at home, you’ll be 100% home. That is the goal you want to do. Now, sometimes I know when you own a business, people call you, and you can’t be home, and I get it. But what I’m saying is you want to try. The goal we want to try is to be at work when we’re there and a hundred percent of time we’re at work we want to work. I love it. Well notable quotable here this is from Russell Simmons okay this is what he says as he’s talking about the why and and your motivation okay he says the goal is to be able to live your life the way Michael Jordan played basketball or Marvin Gaye sang a song to be able to feel the way you feel when you laugh at a joke but to feel that way all the time. A lot of people’s why is to do their passion later. They work at a job to accomplish something so they can be happy, to be able to play golf, to be able to spend more time with their family. But we have to have that why, you’re saying. Does it matter the size of the why at all? It just matters that it matters to you. So I know of a guy who’s an interesting guy. His whole thing is he wanted to get off the grid, and he loved making furniture. So this guy, true story, he had a job in corporate America. And nothing wrong with that, but he decided that he wanted to make furniture and live off the grid. So he moved out to the middle of nowhere. And my brother-in-law actually got married at his place. I won’t say the name of it, because I don’t. But it’s off the my, and he basically bought this abandoned amusement park. This is like a shed. And he turned this shed into a workshop and his house. Well, over time, there was a little pond over here. And he decided to flood the pond and kind of build up a little bit of a dam. Well, now today, there’s this sprawling. And you’ve been there. But there’s a sprawling, like a massive lodge, you know? Yeah. It’s going on. It’s this massive lodge. You’ve got this road that leads up to it. He’s got tons of trees. And he’s making millions of dollars. If you said to me, Clay, to make your millions, I want you to live in a, we’ll call it a shed. Then I want you to dam up a lake or a pond and make it big. And I want you to make custom furniture so you have enough money to buy. He bought an old, abandoned, it was a Kodiak steak lodge or whatever. So he bought one of those, hauled all the logs and built this log cabin himself. And this was his why, though? Yeah, this was his why. And if you asked me to do that, I would totally not be engaged in the pursuit of that. I would say, I don’t want to build a log cabin. That sounds terrible. But for this guy, this was his why. This motivated him. It got him up early, it kept him up late at night. This is his all-consuming passion. And so you have to realize, is that your job right now? I had to realize when working at Target that if I do the best job I can possibly do at Target, if I will just focus with white-hot intensity, if I will just take this magnifying glass and just bring down the sun’s rays and focus them on Target until I’m on fire, that I can make the connections that I need to make and the money to get to my next place. But I had to realize, if I am going to come to work every day at Target and not bring the focus, the magnifying glass of energy, if I’m not going to bring that to Target every day, I’m not going to make the connections and I’m not going to make the money and I am going to be fired and every job you have to either get ahead or behind Either you’re getting fired or getting promoted either you’re getting promoted or you’re getting fired what I mean you’re either getting fired laid off or Promoted you have a little order backwards order backwards You’re saying without this You can’t have this focus without a why clearly to find why cuz I once I realized that I wanted to start a DJ business. This is what I was going to ask. I wanted a little honey badger moment here. What is your first big why? What was your first game changer why? First big deal, I just wanted to, I was sitting in class, I remember it was college and I was going, this, I’ll never forget it. I was sitting there listening to a teacher talk and he was going, now Chairio Scuro, and I’m like, what? And he’s talking about, it’s called Chairio Scuro. We can put the word up on the screen here. We’ll put the actual words I’m mispronouncing it, but it’s how you shade a sphere. He’s going on he’s talking about well the Sun See what happens is the Sun actually Well, we’ll hit an object right here and when it hits an object right here the Sun the Sun’s rays will come in and then It’ll have all the light here and then it’ll be like really really dark over here. I think we got it No, he’ll get into it. He’ll get in he’s talking and he’s going, the sun’s rays, they’re going to hit, they’re going to be here. And he’s talking and I’m going, are we done? He’s like, well, this word is chyreoscuro. And I’m just like, what are you talking about? And he’s, and what you want to do is you want to shade and you want to work. And he’s just making love to this drawing. And I’m going, if I have to sit in another graphic design class to talk to this navel gazer, I’m going to go crazy. That’s where you go. You don’t want to learn from navel gazers. No, because they’re just… So I pulled the professor aside and I said, I pulled him aside of her class respectfully, I said, how much money do you make? You just asked him that? Yeah. He’s like, well, I don’t really think it’s much of your business. And I said, well, I do want to know. You’re my professor. If I stay on this path, how much will I make? He said, well, I make like $40,000 a year. And I’m like, I’ve got to quit, like right now. I’m dropping out right now. If you went to school for six years and acquired $100,000 of student loans to learn how to be a teacher, to teach other kids on how to make $40,000 a year, I am out. I am done. So what was your big why? I just realized I’ve got to find a way. There’s a book called The $100,000 Club. $100,000 Club. Yep. And I wanted to get to $100,000. I thought, man, that’d be awesome. Then I started adding, I would love to hire my dad. Then I said, I want to build a million dollar business, company valued over a million dollars, before I’m 30. Before I’m 30, I want to hire my dad and build that business. And I did both of those things. Boom, because I got focused and intense. But you know what? Everybody watching this, we can all do it. You can have huge success if you’ll just dial in and figure out your why. That was my why, though. So how is the why supposed to impact us? What’s our action item, then? If you’re talking to a thriver, it’s on the other side of the screen right now. And he’s saying, one, I’m not quite sure how big my why is or if it’s big enough. What do we do right now with this? You’ve just got to write down a list of things that you care about deeply in the areas of faith, family, finances, fitness, and relationships. And just define what you want. This is the action item. Right now, write it down. What are your goals for your faith? What are your goals for your family? What are your goals for your finances? What are your goals for your fitness? Relationships, that’s different from your family. I’m talking about your mastermind, your network. Who do you want to get in touch with? Who do you want to become friends with? It took me years to get in touch and get to be good friends with a lot of the Thrive mentors, but it’s worth it. That’s huge. And I want to just take a second for anybody that feels like we threw out this whole phrase, attitude and the altitude of how high you can fly. It’s kind of a jargonization. So, I want to just backpedal a little bit and dive into that phrase, but starting with a notable quotable. Winston Churchill says, attitude is the little thing that makes a big difference. So why does it matter, he says it makes a big difference, that your why impacts your attitude. Well the way I would look at it, and I know this is a little bit, this is like analogy upon analogy, but work with me. If you go with the analogy that your goal is to be inspired to the point where you literally are on fire, or people go, man, you have a pep in your step. I mean you, I say, literally I’m telling you this, you’ll see people who are enthusiastic that look literally hot. Like they look like their skin, like I’m just telling you, they look like they’re fully engaged. Like you’ll see a public speaker who really cares and he will sweat, he will perfuse while speaking. I’ve seen graphic designers literally sweat while doing graphic design. I’m not kidding, because they’re so into it. Their mind is engaged. Their blood’s pumping. This is what they’re doing. That’s cool. If you’re going to get to that kind of inspiration level, you can’t be wet. OK? So if you look at positivity and negativity, the negative side over here, the negative side is kind of that you’re kind of like drowning and drifting and no goals and whatever. You’re saying without the why it impacts your actual attitude right there. I’m talking when you put your why it literally takes it’s almost like you’ve got like we’ve mentioned it’s like you’ve got that magnifying glass and it’s almost like it intensifies everything and you start to get yourself to a point where it literally starts to heat up. But I’m not even kidding. I’ve seen public speakers who sweat while speaking. They’re not doing anything physically exerting. It’s not because of the lights. I’ve seen people who are profusely sweating while playing the guitar. I’ve seen artists. I’ve seen business owners who are, they just get intense. You can see it. Yeah. Well, I think a lot of people, when you talk about attitude, they start to think, okay, yeah, attitude, smile, it’s very surface level, it doesn’t really impact my job. I thought it was incredible when I read this notable quotable from Napoleon Hill. He actually says, a pleasing personality, no sloppy, careless person can be a successful person. Leadership calls for respect. Followers will not respect a leader who does not grade high on all the factors of a pleasing personality. And your attitude is one of the biggest things that actually attracts somebody to you, is it not? Well, here’s what you have. As you get into your attitude, when you think about this, when circumstances, now this is how you know if you have a good attitude or not. If the circumstances are bad, or the circumstances, those are things you can’t control. Circumstances are outside your control. Yeah, so if the circumstances are bad, then how is your attitude? If you have a great attitude when the circumstances are bad, then you actually have a great attitude. So I’ll tell you an example. The other day, something awful happened, and I don’t want to get into all the details, but it was awful. And in your life, something awful happened. It’s going to happen and I remember I was so I gave myself five minutes I mean, this is the little homework right you give yourself give yourself a call a five-minute rule And I am not kidding. I went out to my Hummer out to the Hummer of love out to my Kim Jong-un themed Hummer Yeah, I go out there. Check out those pictures if you have I go out there and I’m like What in the world why is this happening right we did all of this I cannot believe that this would happen. Ah! Mecca-lucca-hiney-ho! I was so mad. I was just furious. I’m just furious. I’m at words. But then, I gave five minutes to it. I just full court press. I was literally like, what in the world? One of our employees walks by the vehicle and they’re like, but I’m just letting it out. I’m so mad in my car. I’m just like, come on! Because I don’t want to give my negativity to someone else. I understand the laws of success and I understand attitudes enough to never be negative in front of other people. I’m just letting it go. And then after I let it go, I’m like, okay, what do I need to do to make this situation better? Then I found out what I need to do. You know what I did? I found out what I need to do required 21 hours. I didn’t know it would be 21 hours. I knew it would take about 5. So I get home, I start working on it, working on it, like I’m not going to get this done. I wake up at midnight, work on it for 9 hours straight, still not done, working on that night, and I’m going, the whole time I’m going, I have a good attitude, I’ve got a good attitude. I can see but the problem is most people when you get the circumstances Are introduced that are bad you start to realize you do not have a good attitude If you only have a good attitude when things are good right a good attitude is what the attitude you have when things are bad Hmm that is what a leader is so why then is it important though if I if I’m an employee if I’m watching this Why is it important for me to have a good attitude? What’s the value you’ve got to convince me? I’m here what you’re saying Why here we go worth having a good attitude all right, bro, so if we you’re you’re from San Diego That’s true. We’ve done that whole San Diego deal that guys if you’re watching you haven’t been to San Diego get there beautiful super awesome This is the ocean. Okay. It’s the ocean. It’s us. This is my beach. Okay. That’s yours. It’s my beach I’m just telling you if you’re at the beach There’s a couple beaches right now where they’re doing some weird rules right now that I might not agree with, but they’re doing some weird rules. But everyone’s got the little, you know, they got the little huts going on. And everyone’s walking around the beach. You see a sea of people. Right. But here I come. I got my headphones on. And I’m walking in the beach and you’re like, you know, you don’t notice me. Okay. You don’t notice me. But you’re super pale, how would I not? Good attitude is like being naked at the beach. Yes, because you get noticed. Is that a lesson not learned? You get noticed. People, they’ll go, there’s only one naked guy on the beach, and he is that? Whoa. But the thing is, I’m just telling you, you need to make sure that with your life that you are the naked person at the beach that everyone notices. OK, so the action item for you now, the action item here is to become the naked man at the beach. Yeah, now here’s the thing. You know, I mean, don’t carry that analogy too far. Don’t actually get… It’s an analogy. Yeah, I guess what I’m saying is what you want to do though is you want to have an attitude that stands out so much that people are like, oh my. I mean, literally, I have over the years as a consultant, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been promoted because someone goes, that guy, I don’t even know what he sells. Let’s just bring him in. That’s awesome. I had a call yesterday real quick from a guy in the medical industry who called me and goes, hey, I’m starting a new venture. And I really don’t know exactly what you do, but I want you to advise us. I’d like you to come in because we need that attitude. Right. Attitude. Literally, you literally said attitude. Like we said, OK, we’ve gone over this, I guess, in review, in summary here. We talked about the power of your why, OK? It actually impacts your attitude. It impacts the altitude at which you can fly because you’re saying that people will be attracted to that attitude Absolutely, and you’re I want to fly like a bird. I want to get there I want to make I believe I can fly you listen to a lot of R. Kelly You’re I believe I can I believe it pumped you’re excited, but you can’t if you don’t have wings, baby You got me just telling you this is the attitude is It’s like you know the bird needs the wings. You, as a business person, need that attitude. Got to have the why. Got to have that why. Love it. Thank you, Clay. Boom. JT, do you know what time it is? 410. Hello, I’m Michael Levine, and I’m talking to you right now from the center of Hollywood, California, where I have represented over the last 35 years 58 Academy Award winners, 34 Grammy Award winners, 43 New York Times bestsellers. I’ve represented a lot of major stars and I’ve worked with a lot of major companies. And I think I’ve learned a few things about what makes them work and what makes them not work. Now, why would a man living in Hollywood, California, in the beautiful, sunny weather of LA, come to Tulsa? Because last year I did it and it was damn exciting. Clay Clark has put together an exceptional presentation, really life-changing, and I’m looking forward to seeing you then. I’m Michael Levine. I’ll see you in Tulsa. Thrivetime Show two-day interactive business workshops are the world’s highest rated and most reviewed business workshops because we teach you what you need to know to grow. You can learn the proven 13-point business system that Dr. Zellner and I have used over and over to start and grow successful companies. When we get into the specifics, the specific steps on what you need to do to optimize your website, we’re going to teach you how to fix your conversion rate. We’re going to teach you how to do a social media marketing campaign that works. How do you raise capital? How do you get a small business loan? We teach you everything you need to know here during a two-day, 15-hour workshop. It’s all here for you. You work every day in your business, but for two days you can escape and work on your business and build these proven systems so now you can have a successful company that will produce both the time freedom and the financial freedom that you deserve. You’re going to leave energized, motivated, but you’re also going to leave empowered. The reason why I built these workshops is because as an entrepreneur, I always wish that I had this. And because there wasn’t anything like this, I would go to these motivational seminars, no money down, real estate, Ponzi scheme, get motivated seminars, and they would never teach me anything. It was like you went there and you paid for the big chocolate Easter bunny, but inside of it, it was a hollow nothingness. And I wanted the knowledge, and you’re like, oh, but we’ll teach you the knowledge after our next workshop. And the great thing is we have nothing to upsell. At every workshop, we teach you what you need to know. There’s no one in the back of the room trying to sell you some next big get-rich-quick, walk-on-hot-coals product. It’s literally we teach you the brass tacks, the specific stuff that you need to know to learn how to start and grow a business. I encourage you to not believe what I’m saying, and I want you to Google the Z66 auto auction. I want you to Google elephant in the room. Look at Robert Zellner and Associates. Look them up and say, are they successful because they’re geniuses, or are they successful because they have a proven system? When you do that research, you will discover that the same systems that we use in our own business can be used in your business. Come to Tulsa, book a ticket, and I guarantee you it’s going to be the best business workshop ever, and we’re going to give you your money back if you don’t love it. We’ve built this facility for you, and we’re excited to see it. And now you may be thinking, what does it actually cost to attend an in-person two-day interactive Thrive Time Show Business Workshop. Watch what a person does, not what they say. Good morning, good morning, good morning. Harvard Keosak University Radio Show. Today I’m broadcasting from Phoenix, Arizona, not Scottsdale, Arizona. They’re close, but they’re completely different worlds. And I have a special guest today. Definition of intelligence is if you agree with me, you’re intelligent. And so this gentleman is very intelligent. I’ve done his show before also, but very seldom do you find somebody who lines up on all counts. And so Mr. Clay Clark is a friend of a good friend, Eric, Eric Trump, but we’re also talking about money, bricks, and how screwed up the world can get in a few and a half hour. So Clay Clark is a very intelligent man, and there’s so many ways we could take this thing, but I thought since you and Eric are close, Trump, what were you saying about what Trump can’t, what Donald, who’s my age, and I can say or cannot say what first of all I have to honor you sir I want to show you what I did to one of your books here There’s a name of Jeremy Thorne who was my boss at the time. I was 19 years old working at Faith Highway I had a job at Applebee’s Target and Direct TV and he said have you read this book rich dad poor dad and I said no and My father may he rest in peace He didn’t know these financial principles So I started reading all of your books and really devouring your books. And I went from being an employee to self-employed to the business owner, to the investor. And I owe a lot of that to you. And I just wanted to take a moment to tell you, thank you so much for allowing me to achieve success. And I’ll tell you all about Eric Trump. I just want to tell you, thank you, sir, for changing my life. Well, not only that, Clay, you know, thank you, but you’ve become an influencer. You know, more than anything else, you’ve evolved into an influencer where your word has more and more power. So that’s why I congratulate you on becoming. Because as you know, there’s a lot of fake influencers out there, or bad influencers. Yeah. Anyway, I’m glad you and I agree so much, and thanks for reading my books. Yeah. That’s the greatest thrill for me today. Not thrill, but recognition is when people, young men especially, come up and say, I read your book, changed my life, I’m doing this, I’m doing this, I’m doing this. I learned at the Academy at King’s Point in New York, acta non verba. Watch what a person does, not what they say. Watch what a person does, not what they say. Whoa.
