Move #57
Don’t over-commit to things.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.” – Steve Jobs (Co-founder of Apple and the former CEO of PIXAR who saved the company from a path to certain failure when he took over the company at the request of his dear business coach friend, George Lucas)
You don’t have to do something just because someone asks you to. Thus, you don’t need to feel the need accept every dinner invitation, every calendar invite and every request for a “quick meeting.” If you feel like your current calendar is overwhelmed with obligations, then it is time to pull some over-commitment-weeds out of your calendar because they are choking off your life. I would challenge you here and now to write out the answers to the following questions for your betterment:
What is something that you committed to that you need to not reup for? _______________________________________________________________
What is a soul-sucking time commitment that you can get out of? ________________________________________________________________
What is an association or networking club that you need to get out of? ________________________________________________________________

Move #58
Create a checklist for everything.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “The volume and complexity of what we know has exceeded our individual business coach ability to deliver its benefits correctly, safely, or reliably (without a checklist).” – Atul Gawande (An American surgeon, writer, and public health researcher. He practices general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Samuel O. Thier Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.)
Southwest Airlines uses checklists for maintaining and flying planes, Manhattan Construction uses checklists for buildings, Starbucks uses checklists for cleaning their bathrooms, Wholefoods uses checklists for their daily operations, and basically anything that is consistently of high quality involves the use of a checklist. Thus, if you want to have a high-quality vacation, office, or life use a checklist.
I would challenge you here and now to write out the answers to the following questions for your betterment:
In what areas of life would a checklist save you massive amounts of time and potential forgetfulness? ______________________________________________________________
How many sales are you losing as a result of forgetting to follow-up? ______________________________________________________________
When was the last trip you went on where you forgot to bring underwear, pants, a tie, or something important because you didn’t have a packing checklist? ______________________________________________________________
Move #59
Don’t attempt to operate by memory.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “We don’t like checklists. They can be painstaking. They’re not much fun. But I don’t think the issue here is mere laziness. There’s something deeper, more visceral going on when people walk away not only from saving lives but from making money. It somehow feels beneath us to use a checklist, an embarrassment. It runs counter to deeply held beliefs about how the truly great among us—those we aspire to be—handle situations of high stakes and complexity. The truly great are daring. They improvise. They do not have protocols and checklists. Maybe our idea of heroism needs updating.” – Atul Gawande (An American surgeon, writer, and public health researcher.
Your business coach mind is for critical thinking, making decisions, and connecting with people emotionally. Your mind is not for remembering which is why pens, paper and computers with memory exist. I realize that education system praises memorization as the path to success, but this is just wrong. Most of the people I know that could remember lots of facts on tests during college can’t tell you the vast majority of what they learned in college. My friend, quit attempting to fill up your mind with random memorization of facts. Instead embrace learning skills and principles through repetition and immersion into that new skill or new language. I would challenge you here and now to write out the answers to the following questions for your betterment:
What is something that you invested an insane amount of time memorizing that you now no longer can remember? _____________________________________________________________
How often does your memory of the Pythagorean Theorem help you during your current workday? _____________________________________________________________
How often do you find yourself referencing the state capitals of every state that you memorized in middle school? _____________________________________________________________
Move #60
Don’t chase new ideas and businesses until you are currently succeeding with your first idea or business.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.” – Sir Isaac Newton
Oh aspiring entrepreneurs, lovers, and car buyers love “the new one.” They love their new girlfriend and her incredible laugh and the way she walks. Oh, they love their new car and they have a blasty blast hopping inside of it giving the new car a fabulous sniffy sniff so that they can enjoy the new car smell and they love…OH YES! They love their newest business idea. Never mind that their current business is barely surviving or is actually failing because their new idea is going to be so amazing it will more than makeup for their losses on their previous ventures. This gambler’s mindset to chronically chasing new ideas will lead you down the path to business coach poverty, but at least you will have a bunch of upset stepchildren, bitter partners, and massive car payments to show for it. I would challenge you here and now to write out the answers to the following questions for your betterment:
In what way have you been guilty of chasing the new idea, the new business or the new something (and you know that I know that I am talking about here)? ________________________________________________________________
Commit here and now to stop chasing new ideas until you execute your current ideas. __________________________________________________________
Move #61
Don’t scale it until you nail it.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.” – Sir Isaac Newton
I often meet entrepreneurs who want to open up location #3 of their business before location #2 is profitable. I meet other entrepreneurs who want to “franchise their proven system” that is consistently losing money for them. My friend you must nail it and get the system correct and profitable before you attempt to scale it. I would challenge you here and now to write out the answers to the following questions for your betterment:
In what ways does your system have to improve before you can scale it? _______________________________________________________________
What goals or metrics of success will you have to see before you know that it is time to scale the business? _______________________________________________________________
Move #62
Don’t network at events where potential clients are not present.
NOTABLE QUOTABLE – “You are the average of the five people you associate with most, so do not underestimate the effects of your pessimistic, unambitious, or disorganized friends. If someone isn’t making you stronger, they’re making you weaker.” – Tim Ferriss
We’ve all found ourselves in someone’s living room or at some networking event surrounded by people that you know and I know that don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of becoming a potential customer, yet you are there. If you are recruiting to find the next super rapper, stop going to NASCAR events and country music dance halls. You just have to be realistic if you want to get more stuff done during your typical work day. I would challenge you here and now to write out the answers to the following questions for your betterment:
In what ways are you fishing in the lake for a rhino? _______________________
In what ways are you pitching self-help courses to terminally ill people over the age of 90? _______________________________________________________
In what ways are you wasting time networking? __________________________
This is the business coach transcription:
It’s business coach school with the BS between optometrist turned entrepreneur, dr. Robert zoellner with us SBA entrepreneur of the Year clay Clark welcome to the Thrive time show on radio 1170, but I’ll show you with the property, show on your radio it’s about time. So anyway, we go. It’S about time to show on your radio and 3-2-1 cubicle probation. Welcome back to the conversation is the Thrive time show on your radio and we are so fired up. We’Re so excited to help you start and or grow that successful company. But you can’t grow a business if you can’t find the time to do it, and I don’t care if you’re, if you’re an attorney your doctor, your dentist you’re somebody with some kind of business at the end of the day, the number one the number one limiting Factor that I hear from business owners as they say I just don’t have enough time to get something. To me always did that’s the number one thing that the second I hear a lot. As you know, I’m struggling with selling more stuff. I need to sell more stuff in the third. Is I’m struggling to find good people, I’m struggling to find the good people to work in my company, but the end of the day?
If you can’t go things done, you just struggle to get things done. You struggle to manage your time. Then it’s going to be hard to get things done to inside today inside the box that rocks. I have mr. Eric Shuff a business coach here on the program Eric. How are you doing my friend, I couldn’t be any better between Redmond business coach on the shed abroad. How are you doing? How are you doing fine gentleman and we have West Carter Tulsa’s number one attorney he’s on the show today he sort of a big deal. West, how are you my friend, I’m doing great? It’S a really nice time today to get up real, quick here West. As an attorney, you have a job that requires attention to detail a lot of detail. Yes, so it’s at a time or I’m thoughtful time or the word meta means above biscuit, you have to be thinking, you have to be planning, it be very strategic, you’re reading legal documents. How do you structure your day to get the legal aspects of your business done while still being responsive to your clients, because you’re known your reputation as a very responsive attorney by the way, you can schedule your free consultation with West Carter? And if you don’t have a great attorney, you need one before you have a legal problem with also being 100 % mentally focused and prepared for a lot of what I do structuring my time throughout the day, because I’ve noticed over the years.
Certain things distract me as a business coach. So, for instance, just a few weeks ago, I had to turn off the audible notifications on my phone cuz I’ll, be sitting at my desk and my phone go off and I knew I got to work email which would maybe want to go see what it is. So it’s things like that when you structure time this hour, I’m going to read my emails, get caught up this hour. I have an appointment this hour. I have these tasks I’m going to accomplish and it ended apron hour or, however long I’m going to revisit my email, so strange chunks in my day becomes important. Let’S make a list. Let’S make a list of the 66 super moves that you actually use. You actually do on a daily basis to free up copious amounts of your time. Do the guys were the most fastidious time managers I’ve ever seen when you’re around him he’s always relaxed he’s always going on two trips and your eyes at me, and this guy is like how’s. He doing it because he’s a very great manager of time now move 57. We’Re taking you all 66 moves move. 57. Is you don’t over-commit two things now: it’s Steve Jobs, the guy who co-founded Apple, the CEO of Pixar, who saved the company from the path to failure we took over the company at the request of his dear friend, George Lucas. He said people think Focus mean saying. Yes to the thing you got to focus on: that’s not what it means it all. It means saying no to the other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’M actually proud of the things that we haven’t done is the things that I have done. Innovation is saying no to a thousand things, so once I go back to you, what are some things I want to get Eric Chupp up your perspective is a business coach. I might get Robert to take on this to Wes.
What are the things that you say no to, or maybe some things were you wish you would have said no to going to talk to your younger self as a younger attorney when you’re first getting going where you going man, I wish I wouldn’t have committed to That talk to me about the things that you currently don’t say. Yes to the things you’re saying no to maybe some of the things that you can coach your younger self, like man, I wish I were I’m business coach committed to that mean like a radio, show haha what charitable sector and people always asking for something for time for money And I get asked a lot to sit on boards that I have to turn down at a really great causes: great organizations, but you can’t sit on them all and help everyone and do a good job. We are trying to raise money to feed the children, to give them toys and to give money to help with trees is a huge things. Were signs wooden signs? We have a fun run, we’re doing or going to shut down all the Riverside. When I run around, it’s called The Turkey Trot and it’s where we tried after we have the turkey and other we going to the Christmas we’re doing and if you’ll notice does a wizard walk for bridges in a March of the dimes and there’s a bunch of Business, I want you to American Cancer Society, the Better Business Bureau. We’Ve got the other kewauna’s, the koalas. It’S a business coach koala is a koala. We got the things I want you to be involved in, please respond which ones you can be on. Please yeah that time it just sucks your time and it when you dip your toe into something like that. You get deeper and deeper and deeper and commitment. So it’s easier just not to say yes in the first place with clients. I found over the years that if I stay in my Lane, I do a better job both for the client and with time management.
So if someone comes and asks me to review a maritime agreement because their ship has a problem, I say no, that’s not what I do instead of yes and then go spend hours there any time rhymes with March of Dimes, which reminds me I know you know That West hates America doesn’t like the community dark chocolates, go back to you. I went up on the winter time. What is the soup kitchen on the timer, so you do? What are the things? Are the Charities are your turn down to my family? That’S what I need a free time or we could skip the concrete company doing those jobs that I shouldn’t have been doing, that I should have paid somebody to do like being an IT guy and setting up the whole office when I could have paid somebody to Do that in like a day, and it took him over to my printer – I need a server okay, I’ll figure out how to setup a server being a mechanic. I’M not a mechanic so doing that work that I should have hired out. I could have saved a lot of time. I could have spent that time, getting more jobs and making more money instead of just requested. People like you would hate the other people would never say yes to. What did you help me move a trailer? That’S what that did happen. A lot actually do have a bigger truck, though, and here’s the move I do now and people ask me to help move. I always say to the rash: how much is the Mover and I’ll just pay for it? Cuz? That’S me. That’S a movie helping, that’s a move, would you have pizza and no? Never Pizza by the guy with the multimillion-dollar business will help you move just stupid. I like a Saturday inside of an entire week and just shot. My back hurts really bad called and said that you could speak to the children forever for one hour a week and then they said we got a great business coach response. We want to see if you could speak for the entire day on the Thursday. I’M like absolutely absolutely. I have cuz, my wife doesn’t like the community right. So that’s. The thing I ask is Robert because you obviously aren’t emotionless selfish self-absorbed, yes guy, who doesn’t care about other people and giving back to the community one or not. You are the kind of man who wouldn’t go over commit, but what are some things that you used to overcome it to, or maybe do see, clients that are over committing to and you’re like me, I just did if we could just stop doing boom boom boom. We could free up more times.
This is a huge somebody, listen to the show now you’re going to hear one of these and go talking about me and you’re, going to feel free to knowing that you can free up data, something that I personally used to really commit to that took a lot Of my time that I no longer commit to is a fighting, fighting fighting seems very Republican fighting in general, so I used to train in Muay Thai, which is kickboxing. So it’s like boxing, but you can do, need girl, name or tie. You know multi anyway, this one time you know actually competed in a fight in a ring and a lot of my time, and I love it. I love doing that. However, training for a fight requires you to train for a minimum of 3 hours per day. So that’s one thing that I kind of had to give up was you know if you’re listening to show right now and you won’t email info at 3:15. I’ll give you a free copy of my Thrive book? If you will send me a YouTube link to your favorite Street Fighter, 2 sonic boom got ta finish. You know that you don’t have to do something just because someone asked you to advise. You don’t need to feel the need to accept every dinner invitation. Every business coach calendar invite and every request for a quick pee if you feel like your current calendars, overwhelms obligations and it is time to pull some over-commitment weeds out of calendar because they’re choking out your life. So I’m asking what is something that you’ve committed to that? You need to not really up for what is a soul-sucking time, commitment that you can’t you can get out of me, what what’s something you can get out of today. What’S an association and dissociation, what’s an association or networking Club you need to get out of it. So important you to this client can I bring something up very relevant to this topic termite? So I know so. I remember you’re really into fitness right now. I don’t you wake up every day, 4 a.m. for him. You work out, but I remember when your first, you know shadowing you a lot you’re frustrating me to become a business coach. You weren’t working out right what to do with my dad getting sick and me being able to kind of find time with my father. So it was signed up to run a business and you can’t miss payroll. You can’t not do things you can’t. So you know when your dad says: hey, I have stage 4 cancer and then your dad. So rudely says you know, I’ve got a LS. You have an option of either a I’m going to be this weak sauce boss, who all the sudden, the glueck’s.
What exit would have committed to because I’ve gone through a personal issue or I’m somebody who’s going to fight through it. And so I what’s going to come out of my calendar, is it my time with my kids my time with my dad my time with my soul? I trade off right, as I took that off my schedule and I don’t regret it. It’S reality and people who can’t handle trade-offs, don’t do well in business. You just got to make more money than most people than you got to watch, lesti West, less TV, the most people. And so how did you decide what you’re going to trade off? I set down and just made a list of time of all the things that I am doing every of every day, and I realized that I mean I’m funny to you guys, but it’s it’s it’s real and Mike should I buy wrote down at the top of My why should I not do that? I mean absolutely not right, but okay should I just neglect. Clients know. Should I just make a list? I realized. Okay, things that have to change is one I’m going to work via appointment. Only to I’m never going to leave the office at 3, I’m going to wear the same thing everyday for I’m not going to drive anywhere 5. I’M going to have to cancel business coach clients require me to drive right to make time to do. That means it’s working right. So we come back 58. Witches create a checklist for everything. I want to get Wes’s mind on this because he’s an attorney – and you just can’t make mistakes as an attorney required to be so detailed stay to the radio. We’Re talking about the art of getting things done. If you haven’t subscribe to podcast, do it right, I’m sure. Com, not shaving cool. Thank you. Scott. Hooked over the truck black cards. Good credit live Eagle, universe.com World Headquarters time. So I put your pants on come on seriously. Alright tribe Nation. Welcome back to the conversation is the Thrive time show on your radio and they were talking about an old school subject. That is the art of getting things done, move to 58 of 66. You got a credit check list for everything now before you fight me on this. I want you to ask yourself right now is an entrepreneur. What are the things you keep forgetting? What are the things your team keeps forgetting I’ll give you an example. I went to 71st and Memorial to a place. That’S called five minute oil change. It used to be Jiffy, Lube I’ve been there I go through for me I was very happy, but I go through the guy says I have you been here before.
I said no, it’s okay, we’re going to go to do a boom boom boom, bang, bang, bang and he doesn’t think he comes back and says: hey your air filter looks like it needs to be replaced. Looks like this next he’s just going through a checklist pay. Your wipers look great today, you need to bust a go ahead and fill up boom boom boom. Bang, bang bang give me the top off the boom boom boom and bang. Bang bang pay your car has 150,000 miles on it. Give me to use a synthetic or do you use any just go through the checklist, and I don’t know what they put on the sign. I think the sign right now says like or oil change on the road there off of Memorial right there, my sunshine Furniture there’s a little. I went to the one at 81st and Harvard in like 1999 or so I’ll be like, and I said absolutely but that’s another example Southwest Airlines when the plane takes off. I want you to understand this. Commercial airlines are safer than cars. Commercial. If you fly it’s safer than the rate of line cuz, I’m afraid of height, I get motion sickness. I don’t like being close proximity to people, I don’t know people don’t wash their hands and I don’t want to touch their hands and I hate flying. I don’t know what are playing. I know that it is safe for the driving because they have a checklist driven system. You know the Boeing 737 has a redundant engine system just so you know if one engine goes out, I got like Captain, so they can still in that Beast sets at work in the Hudson River. When you get in a jet fuel, we have you on the way there on the way to Dallas. I rented a few, but you know said the land that thing not going to. I don’t know you know, I’m saying I can record for you. It was crazy people, we all know people who run out of gas and I have been the person we’ve all been. The person ran out of gas right list, but you have a check list, so I started traveling all the time for business. I as a business coach, literally did this and I’m so stupid. I couldn’t have a check list. I have a huge speaking event for Hewlett-Packard and I didn’t put it on the checklist to always book The First Flight in the morning. Yours take the red-eye flight, hear speaker, you always want to find the day before you speak. You speak on Friday. You fly in on Thursday on the first flight to my assistant was trying to do a good job book to me in a 5 flight, 5 p.m. long story short all my planes get delayed, so I land in Albuquerque to speak for Hewlett-Packard. I land there at like midnight is the flights are delayed, bad weather whatever there and I go to get my rental car and they go I’m so sorry, your your car, the place that rents the cars is closed. So I’m like what airport security guy just it’s just it’s closed, but it opens up tomorrow at 8, at 5, at 7, at the Hilton, that’s in the middle of nowhere to Hilton Casino, become a Buffalo Casino or something so I’m like so you’re saying I have To sleep. By the luggage and then I’ll sit here with my luggage and I wake up, and then I have to drive there and I have to have no delays and get there, so I can get there with ten minutes to spare his. Yes, that’s why? I sleep I set my alarm. I wake up some young boys looking at me, he’s probably 2 or 3 run around the place. Look at the little boy I go to the place. I rent my car. I get my car.
I drive a break all the speed limits I get there thanks. I don’t get pulled over and I’ll turn Albuquerque I get to the speaking of in probably 40 minutes early, so I’m speeding so fast excess of a hundred miles an hour I get to the hotel. Then I realize oh no, I haven’t showered, so I go and I said I took a shower she’s there. All the rooms are booked down there. Okay, great so I go in the locker room. Take a hostile takeover of the golf course shower facilities. I take a shower. I get ready to go, I got to speak, I have no belt rough, no brown belt around your pants are down I’ll, maybe just button it and tell him. So I do the button move and then I’m like my slideshows with my slideshow. It it’s not working, so I plug in the thumb. Drive, it’s not worry, doesn’t sync up some Zone. I go okay, but it’s on Dropbox right. So I know it’s not. On Dropbox now I’m texting calling or entire office they put up on Dropbox crisis averted. No one knew freaked me out, so I made a check list. It said now all my every speaking of in his fourth I’ll fly out the day before early I’m going to have a backup on my business coach thumb drive at the back of laptop I’m going to have any way at all those issues I saw the checklist. I never had another speaking event problem ever again, but before I made the check list, it was like every event. It was like. What’S going to go wrong this time, it went wrong. Every time was not having a checklist in the American surgeon Rider. The guy who makes Cadenhead of the Harvard medical schools on leading professors at the Harvard Medical School he’s at the volume and complexity of what we know has exceeded our individual ability to deliver its benefits correctly safely and reliably without a checklist in the volume in complexity Of what we know is that asking too much for our head, so West Carter you’re an attorney and there’s so many steps. Are there so many things and processes? How do you do it? What kind of checklist do you use it winners in Kingdom? Make sure you don’t screw up when you’re doing a big case? We have several redundant systems that are that you would classify as checklist, so the more important ones are Francis.
A lawsuit has what’s called statue of limitations that you have a certain amount of time. After the claim happens that wreck happens, injury happened to file the lawsuit or you lose it. There’S nothing. You lose all your rights. If you don’t file within a certain window, you lose right. So that means if a client has a million-dollar lawsuit – and I missed it by one day – I’ve now committed in malpractice system of chocolates that we have to ensure that we do not miss any statue of limitations States and then you have the ones that go day Today I mean I’ma, probably talk to 20 30 40 people every single day about complex issues, and so, once my mind changes gears, it’s hard to remember what happened in the morning. I want to hear a story about some case that you won. That was super easy, because the legal team that you were going up against forgot a basic step and sauce. It was like an absolute win. This is this is easy. So, when you’re in a lawsuit, you have something called Discovery where you share information back and forth. One of the things you can do in Discovery, if you send over a request for admissions, I meant that your jerk admit that you screwed my client over it made all these things and they admit or deny all these things. So you can weed out what you had to fight about. The good part is, if you spell to respond to those they’re, all Deans admitted so yeah the other side just totally spaces and doesn’t respond any of those in time allotted we come back. I want you to break down the store. I am super excited to hear this. How is a checklist can help you as an attorney station surprise, I’m show on your radio get ready to enter the Thrive time show on talk radio. 1171. No, you never heard this before, but about to lose a fight to miss the ball, and I wish your competition, a fishing pole or just leave it in the system. Conditions of poor I’ve been lost in the Rhythm in business coach misinformed, Thrive Nation here is the deal we are here to help you have the most successful life possible. So someone from the show we teach things that Lee Cockrell was the former Executive Vice President of Walt Disney World Resorts. He wants told me he said if you’re going to be honest, you better be funny, and so I we hope this show makes you laugh and you learn, but also it’s it’s. It’S like really specific stop and I think a lot of people get uncomfortable. Sometimes, when there something specific and so West West Carter about how you can lose a case, your attorney could lose you a case just by not using a checklist, just like forgetting one simple step.
They could lose the case for you and that’s why Winters and King is the legal team that we were up for the we would recommend for you. But I’m also saying if you are listen to show today and your business does not have a checklist for cleaning the bathroom for answering the phone for anything you do for any of your core competencies. You have got to get a checklist because you are screwing up way too much if you don’t have a checklist. If you have a checklist in your contractor, you’re screwing up here have a script you’re messing up. If you don’t have a checklist for your payroll, you are screwing up. I’M going to take my wife didn’t check every single week, every single dollar that we look at from the accounting perspective Just 4 weeks ago is 5 weeks ago. Somebody turned in I’m not exaggerating over 250 miles that they drove this weekend in during the work week in Tulsa. The problem is: is that the only went 25 and Vanessa goes? I don’t think you might have made a mistake and they’re, like is your my fault, but I’m not exaggerating are total weekly payroll with Thrive would have probably I don’t know, an organization that were doing this year’s holiday party and we’re having it at the email with All the employees, the doctors and I have you know between elephant in the room and drive. There’S 150 people hundred thirty people. She probably catches 25 % of payroll fraud a week of 25 % of what we would pay this Friday every week until she goes through it every week, and when you talk about hours, people make them up, they they they they turn into things multiple times and If we, if my wife was not absolutely like the the the wall to catch that stuff, we would have a real, real bad problem and, if you’re listening today to the show, I want you to look in the statistic up. But according to the US chamber, 75 % Lucas out according to u.s. chamber and CBS News, 75 % of employees are stealing. That means, if you don’t have a business coach approved checklist in place, to watch your company videos on a consistent basis and a spot checking your losing a lot of money. You too, fast. Before we went to the break West, was telling us a story about how an attorney almost lost it or maybe did lose a deal as a result of just not doing a check with Wes reset the story tell us this example of how someone Could lose a court case? Lose a litigation, lose a lawsuit as a result of simply not using a checklist if they are an attorney. So we’re talking about Discovery and part of Discovery is request for admissions. It nearly allows you to narrow down what you’re going to fight about, and so you send over these admission admit you know you did this.
You cause me this much damage all the things that you’re going to fight about in a lawsuit if they fail to respond to those they missed that deadline to respond all those deemed admitted in your favor or is it via email or email? If you miss that the judge has a discussion to let you off the hook, but you have to go in front of a judge and if you’ve already missed a deadline or I’ll give you an extension before you miss the second one. You may just lose the case right then, and there just for missing a deadline. Irregardless of the facts, just the fact that you missed a deadline. You could lose the entire case right then, and there we had the same kind of thing in the construction industry, because I paid you on your invoice. If you don’t send him a pre lien day notice by 75 days, you lose your right to file a lien at 90 days, even if they owe you money for 75 days to file a lien on that 90th day. If you don’t send that feeling too bad. So sad true story had a thriver. I talk to you this week and they’re going to head into bankruptcy. I told him it’s time to wrap it up because you didn’t, you did not do exactly what are chapped ass to do either you you knew people owed. You money, but you didn’t call him on it. You didn’t file that praline, you just didn’t. Do it and I said all these are like aged man likes like 6 months and so you’re not going to get it. So you really do need to just declare bankruptcy and in go work for somebody, and I had that conversation and that’s not a good thing. If you’re listening to the show today, I mean think about the Southwest Airlines, uses checklist for maintaining and flying planes Manhattan to destruction, uses checklist for buildings. Starbucks uses a checklist for cleaning your bathroom’s Whole Foods uses for the daily operations and, basically anything that is consistently high-quality uses a checklist us if you want to have a consistently high quality system, vacation office or life use a checklist. I ask you in what areas of your life with a checklist, save you massive amounts of time and potential forgetfulness Robert you’re, a business coach. You do with clients all the time you work with and you help them. You business coach them. You help clients improve dramatically talk to me about a situation where you say man. If, if, if a client would just start using a checklist, that would help them tremendously, and I also want you to brag a little bit, because you have a client that went from ,000 this year, Revenue to 3 million. Oh yeah, the difference of the discipline of that client vs., maybe the average person the discipline of that client, the guy’s a marine. So he has a little bit this man. It’S American Technologies, Jonathan Shepherd, American American American Technologies, americom tg.com, that’s americom! Tg.Com has been able to grow his electrical and Telecommunications contracting business to and Clay they are going to grow even more they’re starting to get into like home security. I’Ll come on come on now and he is just dominating.. Pretty what are the biggest areas clay lately? I’Ve seen with a number of different clients I’ve worked with, and luckily the cable to work with are really coachable. Oh yeah, I think so. They just need to know the proven system when the biggest areas that I think clients I’ve worked with have improved in the most in regards to check list is Lee track. We track is just keeping track of your lease. I mean I’m working with different contractors.

Modeling auditions in New York in the 80s on the radio yo my hand modeling career. It started off like with a went to who, if you’ve been with John Casablancas talking about Casablanca City in the middle of the mall, we are trying to rope in teenagers. She’S, probably blonde she’s kind of Slender, you know ,000 for a real potential to be a Top Model Top Model me. You have a buddy, it’s always a man who will decide he’s fabulous. Oh, my gosh the potential to be a model, and you just the way that you connect your your your your gate. The way that you hoes Anora yours, it’s a tear, your posture is phenomenal and we just want you to know that your child has potential metrical at Top Model. You see this stuff, you seen this. I haven’t what happened to Christina here’s. The deal now for, like ,000, will take your head shots and we will find it will enter you into the database where all of the modeling agencies go to search for talent, talent. I was never asked to do that. Maybe by the hucksters people who had several people call me afterwards wanted to go back and sue them, because they’re modeling portfolio they paid ,000, for it turns out to be glamour shots at the local Studio. I know, what’s up with that, reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite. Man-Eater, 14 or 15. You want your mother to have been in a sexual being 59, all the sudden it just all the sudden. I would just know that I care okay to operate by memory. This is huge by memory. I want to start with you so many clients, I’m sure, there’s a client that you’ve never worked with. I’M sure your clients you’ve never had this problem, but there’s somebody out there that refuses to use a script or refuses to use a checklist or refuses to use anything documented because it’s all in their head it so hard to teach people show me redo.
The recordable unleashed the knowledge we don’t get in business college. This is for my guy who’s, the big boss, who were the checklist Manifesto. He is a leading position over there at the Harvard Medical School. He says we don’t like checklist that can be painstaking, that much fun. What will be the issue here is me or laziness, there’s something deeper, more visceral going on when people walk away not only from saving lives hospital, but from making me feel somehow beneath us to use a checklist in embarrassment. It runs counter to the deeply held beliefs about how the truly great Among Us, those those we aspire to be handle situations of high-stakes and complexity. The truly great are tearing the improvised. They don’t have protocols and checklists, maybe or idea of her a system needs updating. Okay, so break it down there, except what is he talking about? Okay, so basically I got to just a cold. I want to bring up the John Kelly told me. I don’t know who this is the mind is for thinking and the pen is for remembering remembering remembering those three more times, because I want someone to write this down, because so many others trying to get a piece of paper going, your mind is for thinking in the pen is for remembering the pain is for remembering in the mind, is for Thinking because I want to do this, I’m somebody needs to write this down one more time. The mind is for thinking and the pin is for remembering, okay break it down words that mean there’s too much stuff going on. Like we’ve been talking about, so you have to use a checklist, and typically, when I’m working with business coach clients, I see that it’s it’s a lack of them, knowing how to train people or the end of writing a manual. They don’t write a check list of man. You want it becomes really cumbersome, so the employees black refuse to use it. She’S got a pair that thing down to an actual check list that is operational and then just the pin is for remember, remember you making decisions in connecting putting out flyers and, yes, your mind is not remember, which is why pins paper and computers with memory exist And I realize guys at the education system right now praises memory station is the path to success. Look, you can memorize things and you can get a beet look. You can memorize, isn’t getting it. Some freaking believable most of the people. I know, though, that can remember lots of facts and test during college. Can’T tell you the vast majority of what they learn, so you got to quit quit attempting to try to memorize all this crap cuz. No one cares the stuff when you need it, you have to go to solve problems, that’s what it’s all about. His is the ability to find the solutions and get things done, not able to memorize things, Robert break it down and says something that I love about. The quote by Atul gawande is some people. You know you may be listening to say Walton and mining industry, or I’m just too good, I’m just too good for a checklist.
Atul gawande is talking to Harvard nearest middle school to Harvard train surgeons, he’s telling train surgeon. Some of the brightest minds are people. You know who tell these folks. Are they have the brightest Minds in the world, but my usual? Well, you know, I know that is a unique industry and there is some just good old-fashioned. You know on the Fly part that goes on it. Doesn’T it doesn’t matter what industry? It is a toga want a the message here. You say regardless of it, you can’t rely on your memory when the stakes are high. It you got ta fall back on. The check was in one of the biggest things I’ve learned since I’ve. You know join you clay and the entire team. Here at 3, we had a little bit of don’t know what it is. It’S just using a daily to-do list and I become so dependent upon anytime. Anyone says anything and anytime. I say I’ll do something for someone else. I add it to this to-do list, so I don’t leave it to just my memory Industries different. I would be with the pits exotic pets. Robert Robert says they have a petting zoo near me, to check my to can receive my check list. So many people fight that idea. They just fight. I don’t know what it is west west help somebody it won’t be. What happened in my industry lot of energy through matter what kind of work you’re in? Even if you were lying, your memory will see wake up in the morning or in the shower you’re like okay. I got this this this and this to do. I’M going to get it all done today, you show up to work and there’s a fire there’s an emergency and not a literal fire and emergency from a client or from one of your employees, and that consumes the first part of your day or happens in the Middle of the day and all the sudden it’s 5:00 at 6, you had to do something before close of business and because nothing popped up reminders. You cuz, you weren’t, checking a chocolate you’re, looking at anything to help remind your than your memory that emergency at distracted. You past the due date, and now you screwed yourself now here is that I want. I want you to think about their thrive. Nation. Real quick is 1 is what is something that you’ve invested in insane amount of time, memorizing, that you can no longer remember example of something that I spent in college. I was required know that this is bigs.. I just laughed reflecting on my own life and how I memorize koine Greek, ancient Greek – that’s no longer being used anymore. How much time I spent memorizing that and I’m not trying to rip or are you. But if you are at Oru – and you are offended by this, then you should really just pray about it. Pray about it or are you you had to memorize vast portions of the Old Testament and then you had to recite them back on a paper. Now, here’s, what happens is I I can’t I mean this the other day someone asked me once you’re done with your daughter’s middle name. I don’t know my kids meal name about another birthday, so I just took care of her next to me, but I just remember your son’s middle name. What’S your middle name, I don’t know, I know their birthdays and I just don’t know so. You know all. I know is that I do show up on their birthdays when they have them, but the point is: is it people like they they they they Pride themselves on memorization. Why I like working so hard to memorize huge portion of the Old Testament? I turn in my paper I take night. I show up for the test and I get like a bee every time and then everything that I try to make calls an adult that I learned. I can’t remember a single thing for my entire process of memorize. The Old Testament or Roberts University. Why am I saying that I don’t know?
