Since I started working with Clay over 3 years ago as a business coach, I have been able to meet a lot of very successful people including Clay himself. All successful people share a lot of the same characteristics and mindsets and it is easy to spot them. There is something else that all successful people have. Whether they are an owner of a multi-million dollar business, a pop singer, or a best selling author, they all have haters. There will always be someone who will follow you around trying to spread negativity and even try to attack you, your family, and everything that you do. It can be a lot to take in once you begin to see success because the hate will start flowing into your direction. The most important thing to understand is that, if you don’t have haters, you are not doing anything noteworthy.
I have been in meetings with my business coach clients and while we go over wins, they tell me they have a great win, they have a new hater. This can come in many forms. It can come in the form of a negative Google review, removal of you and your company from a board or committee, or a brick through your shop window. I recently had a client told me that he had been excommunicated from all of the local guilds and boards. These were organizations of companies in the same industry that had agreed to “Coexist and learn from each other”. He started offering a hot no-brainer offer and his business began to grow while theirs slowly dwindled. He was so fired up when he found out he had some new haters because he knew he was doing something right. He knew he was having success. If it has been a while and you have not had someone reach out to hate on you, you should be concerned. People don’t hate on people who are not doing something big enough to hate.
The most important thing to understand is that, if you don’t have haters, you are not doing anything noteworthy.
In the process of growing a business, not only will you get copious amounts of hate, you will also get rejected day after day. Rejection and hate are two things you have to trick yourself and retrain yourself into enjoying. Every time you gain a hater, you have done something else right. Every time you get rejected, you get one step closer to your goal. You have to flip it so that you are not constantly focused on the negative. There are already so many negative things happening every day that we have to focus on the positive.
One thing that you will receive as you grow is unwanted feedback. Your family, your employees, your customers, your competitors, your church, your personal trainer and your neighbor will consistently provide you with feedback on how to run your operation. Even though none of them have successfully done it, they will happily provide you with tips and tricks that will ultimately lead you to your ultimate demise. You must stay the course and stay focused. Keep your mind locked onto your daily revenue-producing activities that will lead you to success.
As your growth continues, the number of haters you have increased, rejection happens every day, and all of the unwanted feedback flows in more than ever. All of the successful people I have met have had some sort of mentor or a business coach. They have a person that knows how to deal with all of the new distractions and burning fires that are your new day to day. They have found the best in their field and learned through mentors and not mistakes.
