The problem with many of today’s business coaches and coaching programs is that they are focused on mindsets, motivation and emotions, and not on implementing proven best-practice systems, strategies and action steps that will actually grow a business.
The vast majority of business coaching programs invest most of each coaching session trying to motivate the entrepreneur and discussing how he or she feels. Rather than focusing on developing, marketing and selling products and services that people actually want to buy, many business coaching programs have essentially become quasi-psychologists for many lone-ranger entrepreneurs in search of somebody who will finally understand them and the inherent loneliness often associated with founding and growing a successful company.
Although there is value in hiring therapists, psychologists and life coaches, that is not what business coaching is about. Instead, it’s about helping real business owners grow real businesses as a result of discovering breakthroughs and implementing proven best-practice systems and processes, many of which are often too complex and difficult to implement without proper coaching and mentorship.
Effective coaching absolutely has the ability to transform your business, but sadly, most business coaching has devolved into half-baked entrepreneur therapy sessions. To demonstrate the power of effective business coaching, consider Eric Schmidt, the former executive chairman of Google who hired Bill Campbell to be his business coach. Schmidt described his initial thoughts about coaching and his relationship with Campbell in Fortune: “How could a coach advise me if I’m the best person in the world at this? But that’s not what a coach does …They have to watch you and get you to be your best … Once I realized I could trust him and that he could help me with perspective, I decided this was a great idea.”
There are an estimated 53,300 business coaches, according to the International Coach Federation. So how do you know which ones are the real deal? As with hiring a cosmetic surgeon, an auto mechanic or a homebuilder, it’s wise to do your research in the following two areas:

Really dive into the content of what people are saying: Search for video reviews, if possible, and listen to what former clients have to say. Are they talking about feelings, or are they sharing the real results that their business coach helped them generate? It’s possible to love your business coach but also be broke.
Verify Claims
Too often, business coaching material is taught by coaches who have never grown a business (other than their program), so everything they teach is theoretical at best, and they may have no idea if it will actually work for you and your business. Does the program seem too good to be true? If it’s promising overnight success or huge profits that seem unrealistic and unsustainable, it probably is.
A business coach can change your life and your business, but it‘s important to take the time to vet your coach. Make sure you do your due diligence to find the program that is right for you.

I am the father of five human kids and the former United States Small Business Administration entrepreneur of the year. This is an article that I recently wrote, so I’m going to do is I’m going to have chuck read an excerpt from the actual article and then we’re going to break it down so that I’m making sure that we’re all understanding the, the, the, the deeper concept in this and we can all vaccinate ourselves and protect ourselves from manipulative jackass theory that you can typically find at your local networking event or local chamber of Commerce. Okay, so here we go. This is an example. The problem with many of today’s business coaches and business coaching programs is that they are focused on mindset. So I’m going to queue up audio real quick from what a typical business coaching program sounds like
and I want to now make sure in the time that you’re. Let’s kick this in gear and let’s talk about three things that can truly change the quality of your life. Number One, first of all, if you make new decisions about the focus on. Try this just for a moment, just for a second, take a deep breath in, exhale and give it a moment. That was really pathetic. Let’s try that again. Deep breath in and make it a sexual moan and thoroughly enjoy it. Oh, that was much longer and deeper. I liked that. That was good. One more time. Deep breath in and giving them own. What the crap are we doing now? One of the things that I want to talk to you about here tonight, this afternoon is really simple and that is everyone here is in business and there’s a problem that all businesses have. We’re in the most competitive environment we’ve ever been in.
I’m so glad he has a fundamental understanding of capitalism. So that’s the kind of crap you hear at these motivational events. This is not what my business coaching program is. I’m a little demotivated after, as an example, if you go on to thrive time show.com and you look at the testimonials of let’s say a doctor, uh, April lie, she’s a dentist. She will talk about how their sales are up by 30 percent this year. She’ll talk about how their sales one month we’re up 70 percent, but average for the, for the year, they’re up over 30 percent. If you watch the testimonials that thrive time show.com with let’s say the, the platinum pest, a owners, you’ll see their sales are up by 400 percent this year. If you look at Steve Currington with total lending concepts, the mortgage guy, you’ll see his sales are dramatically up. If you check out Aaron antice, the largest home builder in Oklahoma, you’ll see that his sales are up so, but a lot of these programs, they’re trying to take the place of organized religion.
So if you’re out there and you typically would go to a Buddhist temple and now you’re like, well, I’m going to go to a motivational seminar instead. That’s what you’re gonna find with most coaching programs. They spend most of each phone call chip most of each session focusing on focusing on aligning your values to your, to find your, your values with the team, understands the mission. There’s a lot, there’s a lot of time and a lot of time focused on mission statements. A ton of time, very little time Bagels, a lot of selling, anything right? Um, a lot of time focused on trying to create culture. Not a lot of time on actually growing the business. Um, and if you look at big companies that have great culture, like southwest airlines, they spend their time on focusing on getting planes off the ground on time and they reward people for being comical if their flight attendants, which is where the culture comes from, is doing your job on time.
No delayed flights, keeping your price is super low and being aggressive about that, that’s where the culture comes from. You get a bunch of people to hit deadlines and they’re funny and they get stuff done and you keep fighting to keep your prices low. That’s what creates the culture. Sounds like you just described the thrive time show, but you don’t just sit around and uh, never. I mean, what if Southwest Airlines never actually sold airplane tickets, but they just focused on how do you guys feel? Could you imagine how weird, how weird it would be if the, if the head of southwest airlines gets up there and she says, all right guys, here’s the deal. Our founder, Herb Keller, he focused on keeping the prices low and making sure the planes, we didn’t lose luggage. Our prices are low. Let’s review. Prices are low. We don’t lose luggage, we take off on time. That’s what herb Keller focused on. What I want everyone to do is I want everyone to make a big sexual moan.
There’s a card her off, get her outta here. Unbelievable. But that’s what all those seminars do. And then she’ll say, now I’ll tell you what the problem is. First, the world used to have like a, uh, all of a sudden she became Bostonian, first of all will use to have like a $500 million people and now there’s like a $3 billion online. So that’s a problem. Complication a, let me give you example. They used to be a time, whether it was like a king and a, they had this thing called a Fifa Fifa Band, right? You’d have like a vassal, the feudal society. You would have lords and manners and then after that people will be developed more skills because people had an abundance of food. And so they began to become a black smith tradesmen of some kind. A pretty soon the church replaced, organized religion, indulgences occurred.
Then we moved into a time of limited freedom. We, they fled, they got in the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria. They came over to Plymouth rock rack. Next thing you know, rack lab staff, mixing in. Next thing you know, we met, we met squad toe. Uh, we met secretary, we and such. All of a sudden, all of a sudden we’re out there having thanksgiving. Uh, now the Patriots won. All of a sudden, now the, the Patriots are playing on our Thanksgiving and so all is well. But my point is the world’s changed. I mean, what? The crap is just so stupid. We don’t need halfass history lessons thought from a spoken from a guy who has no notes, just ridiculous. Just running around in a black fashionable shirt. Talking about quantification is just stupid moaning no matter how big your head and your fingers are unbelievable.
Okay, so now we have to do is we have to ask ourselves, what does actual business coaching look like? It evolves you taking notes on how to actually get your site to top of Google. It involves actually talking to you about the phone call recording system that is endorsed by Oxi, fresh elephant in the room and big brands called clarity voice. It’s about making actual scripts. It’s about deadlines, making a product people actually want. It’s about accountability, accountability. It’s about accounting. It’s about management. It’s about sales. I have a motivational quote for all the listeners out there. This is from Andrew Carnegie who was the world’s wealthiest man and he says this and maybe this will be helpful for you and maybe it’s not helpful for you and if it’s not helpful for you, then what you need to do is you need to get off this podcast and go to a motivational seminar and spend all your money chasing something that you can’t find and that is called motivation. Andrew Carnegie, he writes this and we’ll put on the show notes. He says, people who are unable to motivate themselves must be content with mediocrity. No matter how impressive their other talents. As an example, if I have to go to church to become motivated, I will never be successful. That’s not where the church is for the churches, for the teaching of the word so you can hear the word and so you can help those who cannot help themselves.
That is what church is about. Church is not a motivational conference. Motivation is an external thing. Inspiration is when you personally can inspire yourself because when you find the way to light your own flame, how to catch your own fish. Daddy’s is what inspiration is. I don’t have anybody in my life who motivates me. I don’t. I don’t need anybody to motivate me. I’ve never met a successful person that needs an external force to motivate them. If you are looking for an external force to motivate you, you will always be a pathetic loser. If you have to go from one event to the next to ride the motivational wave, you’re not going to win. I promise you you’re not gonna win because eventually you’ll discover that the person like td Jakes, who runs that church, he didn’t have to inspire himself. I listened to td jakes.
I could learn about the character of God, but I don’t listen to td jakes because he motivates me every morning. I mean have. If I was struggling for. I mean, so every morning I wake up today’s no different. I wake up and I say, frick, it’s three in the morning, so within 30 seconds to a minute or so I try to have a iced coffee if I can, I can’t have that. I’ll have an energy drink or something just to wake me up, you know, and then I listened to something to get my brain going and I take a shower. I just tried to go as soon as, as fast as possible. But the chap, he, he can’t have. Your coaching consists of motive. A motivational,
right? If, if you don’t have that fire already, this is the biggest differentiating factor I’ve seen between successful entrepreneurs and people that quit because you don’t need that. So my dad was a perfect example. I grew up in a house watching them and do this. He would get up between two and four every morning, morning, whether get the guys scheduled out, make his to do list every day. Doesn’t matter if he’s sick, no matter if it feels bad. We’ve got a 30 man crew in 30 grand worth of payroll. We got to cover this week to get up and do it.
It’s when you watch, um, organizations that are successful, I would use the Patriots football team as an example. I would use a Warren Buffett and Berkshire hathaway is an example. You don’t see them ever doing the motivational talk that you see from the people who try to are the charlatans who tried to motivate people, right? Like, I know for a fact that, you know, Warren Buffet would, his talks. I’ve watched him before his talks. I mean, Bill Bellacheck, his post game talks with his players are very much guys. We did a good job defensively. We could have been stronger. Uh, the game ball today goes to a slater, good to work on special teams. We’ve got a lot of film to watch and uh, tomorrow we’re planning our next week. We’re planning against the bills. So get your rest. We’ll see you guys Tuesday. I mean,
what it is. Any emotion or motivation kind of feels weird. It was like, what? Because that’s not what it’s about. Exactly.
I’m just telling you. Motivational seminars are the antithesis of business coaching, but people have tried to weave it.
Just something because it’s sellable. You’re trying to push themselves to action, but in fact, like you always say, you’ve got to take the first and that creates inspiration, motivation, confidence. company. So here we go. If you can’t handle loneliness, don’t start a company because when I have to make a tough decision, I don’t run it by a committee you can’t write. You’ll never make the decision. As an example, my wife and I are are contemplating the idea of purchasing a home in Puerto Rico. We’re content. We’re contemplating this. Excuse me, it’s the cool. No, I am Caucasian American and I have zero. I’m a really knowledge of any other culture, not gonna. Roll those hours for pain. I’m going to go in there, go, hey, I want a border. It’s like a stage I’m going to go and I’m going to say Porto Rico, I’ll make a sign where I changed the spelling of it and it’ll go in there and looking for Rico. He’s supposed to show me where the porter is. Where is Porto Rico? But anyway, we’re thinking about buying a home there.
Now, the reason why I’m thinking about it is we’ve looked at the tax law for a long time, but the reason why I haven’t committed to it is because again, I have to have a deep knowledge of something before I act, so I’m going down there on probably three, four weeks. My wife, we’re going to go down there, stay for a few days and I’m going to read my oldest son and my oldest daughters. I have one son of one of my oldest daughter’s 13. My son is 11. I’m gonna bring the old two oldest kids and then the other ones I went, not gonna bring him along. I just want to. I want to be there for an amount of time. So I’d be like, Hey, if we lived here, this is how it would be. And we might, we might come back and say that absolutely is not going to be a good fit for us, or we might come back and said that is a fit.
We’re not coming back, but it’s not a motivational thing. Right? I’m not doing it because I’m excited about it. Like it’s a logical thing that makes sense. And yeah, there’s parts of it would be nice to be. Things could be worse than living near the water and having beautiful weather, but the same time, I might hate that. I Love Oklahoma. I love it here. I love living behind the wall so I might, I might hate it. So I don’t know. I’ve just been. I’m going to go look at it. But what would happens is that these seminars and most coaching programs, they try to convince you to do things because you feel like it. They try to motivate you. But if you are a plumber or a photographer or a real estate agent of some kind, you have to be alone for at least two hours to three hours a day to organize your day
and not just physically alone. You’re mentally alone know if people have never run a business, they don’t understand the stress. Like we were saying earlier, if payroll, making sure your pipeline’s full while you’re still doing all of the work that you’re supposed to be doing because there are families that literally depend on.
We started elephant in the room, my brother in law and I, we decided that we would start the company and I told them, hey, I’ll write a check for $2,500 a week every single week. I’ll do that for five years. I’ll write a check for $2,500 a week every week for five years. That sort of my commitment level to this business and he’s okay sure, but like two years in when you’re still writing a check every week for $2,500 a week to people’s payroll. So if somebody out there says, I want to buy an elephant in the room, I’d say, okay, well you need to plan on writing a check every week for $2,500 a week until you break even and well, but what are your tips for staying motivated? I’m not motivated, I’m just doing it. It has to be done. A marriage, another example, it’s not about motivation.
It’s about you signed up for it. You committed quit dating other people who are not your spouse. Quit looking at things you shouldn’t look at going out with the fellows. That’s what marriage is. Being a parent. It’s not about like I feel motivated. It’s called you have a kid. Raised them. Don’t be an idiot. People ask me all the time, what are your tips for staying motivated to be a good parent? Trust me, my. If I had any motivation at all to be a good parent that is long gone now it is. Okay. Shawn, I want to get your take on this because I wrote here that real business coaching is about helping real business owners have real breakthroughs as a result of implementing proven best practice processes and systems. So I’m gonna. I’m gonna. Want you to think about it? I want you to think about it. What is an example of one thing? I’ll start with you, chuck. One thing that you have taught your clients, a client you can think of that they’ve implemented. Just one thing that they have implemented that is produced massive success for them. Uh, excuse me.
Tracking. I’m tracking all of the key performance indicators and the hub jam Luco and we’ve been doing this. It’s awesome. He’s been tracking now for going on a year solid and we have so much data that we can go back and look at how much are we spending on advertising, how many new gym members that we have this week, how much total products did we sell, how much of the food service that we sell, so we can keep track of that every single week, and it’s he’s been able to create time freedom while his business is growing and he’s not working 80 to 100 hour weeks anymore because we’re able to implement this tracking system,
so I’m going to Cuba and an audio testimonial from platinum pest. They our clients we’ve worked with for a long time, about two years, and they’ve been implementing the system. Now. The reason why we only have 160 clients will never grow beyond that is because we’re about implementation. I am not about creating motivation. I’m about implementation. I’m about implementing. Thomas Edison said that vision without execution is hallucination and these people are not hallucinating. They’re actually doing what they’re supposed to do. They’re implementing the system. It blows my mind. Here we go.
The number of new customers that we’ve had is up 411 percent over last year. We are a jared and Jennifer Johnson. We own platinum pest and lawn and are located in Awasa, Oklahoma. And we have been working with thrive for business coaching for almost a year now.
Yeah. So, so what we want to do is you want to share some wins with you guys, uh, that, that we’ve had by working with thrive. First of all, um, we’re on the top page of Google now. Okay. Um, I just want to let you know what type of accomplishment this is. Our competition, Orkin Terminex, they’re both at one point $3,000,000,000 companies. They both have two to 3000 pages of content I’m attached to her website. So to basically go from a virtually nonexistent on google to up on the top page is really saying something, um, but let’s come by being diligent to the systems that the thrive has about being by being consistent and diligent on, on do a podcast and stay on top of those podcasts, um, to really help with getting up on what they’re listening. And a ranking there with Google
and also we’ve been, I’m trying to get google reviews, you know, asking our customers for reviews and now we’re the highest rated and most reviewed and company in the Tulsa area. And that’s really helped with our conversion rate. And the number of new customers that we’ve had is up 411 percent over last year.
Wait, say that again. How much are we at 411 percent. So 411 percent. Um, we’re up with, with our new customers are amazing, right?
So not only do we have more customers calling in, we’re able to close those deals at a much higher rate than we were before. Right now our closing rate is about 85 percent. And that’s largely due to that. First of all, like our Google reviews that we’ve gotten. People really see that our customers are happy, but also we have a script that we follow. And so when customers call in, they get all the information that they need. Uh, that script has been refined time and time again. Uh, it wasn’t a one and done deal. We, it was a system that we, that we followed with, thrive in, in the refining process, and that has obviously, um, the 400, 11 percent shows that, that, that, that system works. So here’s a big one for ya. So last week alone, our booking percentage was 91 percent. We actually booked more deals and new customers last year. Then we did the first five months or I’m sorry, the effort, we put more deals last week than we did the first five months of last year from before we worked with thrive. So again, we book more deals last week, then the first five
months of last year. And it’s incredible. But, but the reason why we have that success by implementing the systems that, that thrive is taught us and helped us out with
some of those systems that we’ve implemented our group interviews that way we’ve really been able to come up with a really great team. Um, we’ve created and implemented checklists and everything gets done and it gets done right? It creates accountability. Uh, we’re able to make sure that everything gets done properly, both out in the field and also in our office. Um, and also doing the podcast, like jared had mentioned that has really, really contributed to our success, but that like is it the diligence and consistency and doing those in that system has really, really been a big blessing in our lives. And also, um, you know, it’s really shown that we’ve gotten the success from following those systems. Yeah.
So before working with thrive, we’re basically stuck really no new growth, um, with our, with our business and we’re, we’re in a Rut and we didn’t know exactly
the last three years, our customer base and pretty much stayed the same. We weren’t drinking, but we weren’t really growing either.
Yeah. And so we didn’t, we didn’t really know where to go, what to do. I had to get out of this Rut that we’re in, um, but thrive helped us with that and you know, they implemented those systems that they tossed those systems. They taught us the knowledge that we needed, um, in order to succeed. Now it’s been a grind. Absolutely. It’s been a grind this last year, um, but we’re, we’re, we’re getting those fruits from, from that hard work and a diligent effort that we’re able to put into it. Um, so again, we were in right, thrived, helped us get out of that Rut. Um, and uh, and if you’re thinking about, I’m working with right, quit thinking about it and just do it, do the action and you’ll get the results. It will take hard work and discipline. Um, but, but, uh, but that’s what it’s going to take in order to in order to really succeed. So I would just want to give a big shout out to thrive. The big thank you out there to the thrive. We wouldn’t be where we’re at, where we’re at now. Um, without their help.
It’s interesting. But during their testimonial they didn’t share anything about being sufficiently motivated on a weekly basis by an external force who asks them to make big sexual groans. They do that all on their own. Okay. So now Sean, talk to me about a client that you worked with that’s implemented a few of the things you go, Hey, they’ve implemented one thing and that one thing has helped. What’s one thing that one of your clients is it? But it just was one, one little thing they’ve actually implemented. Okay. Uh, I’ve got a client who is local here in Tulsa and her name is sally and she is a realtor and she had no idea about the power of Google reviews and at this point it’s been about four months since we’ve been coaching her and she’s got over 100 google reviews. She’s the highest rated and reviewed realtor in Tulsa now, but it was just teaching her the system of how to go about getting them systematically and not just being a theater thing.
There’s a system for gaining objective reviews from real customers. There’s this, there’s a way to do it. There’s a way not to do it, um, to speak to what Sean’s saying. If you google carpet cleaning quotes, Oxi fresh a brand that I both coached and worked with. And, and, uh, John Jonathan Barnett, the founder of that company, it’s been a, a friend of mine, I knew of him in college. He first asked me to Dj for his fireworks, uh, that I did not realize it at the time, but that’s how he was funding the creation of Oxi fresh was by starting the fireworks stand. And I’ve worked with John over the years and he’s now sold over 400 Oxi fresh franchises. If you google search carpet cleaning quotes, Oxi fresh is number one in the world as a result of consistently getting google reviews. Another system that we implemented in my own companies is the use of checklists.
Simply put the complexity of business today or in any day, is too much for the average human head. My head cannot remember all the steps. So I brought Jason on today’s show. Jason is these Super Manager for three elephant in the room, Tulsa based stores. I’m Jason. Can you talk to me about why it is so important for your team and for you to use checklists on a daily basis? Oh yeah, absolutely. Without a checklist, nothing would get done. Here we have so many things to do daily that I like to think I’m a smart person, but if I were to take the mass amount of things that are on the checklist and try to just remember each and every one of those, when they need to get done, how they need to get done, I would fail just as a, as a, as a fun. It’s a fun exercise here.
I’d like for you to list off as many of the things as you’re supposed to do today that you can remember. There’s no right or wrong, but all of us are listening in judging because this is your core job. This is a draft and I would say I was asked, you know, if I was asked to do this, I could probably name two percent of your list. You might be able to go higher than that, but I’m going to give you 60 seconds on the clock to name some of the things you’re supposed to do today. Three, two, one. And
here we go. Opening checklist. Turn on all of the shop lights. Turn on all the computers and the IPADS. Make sure the music is on another to bill level. Unlock the door for the stylist. Grab a blue pouch for all data. Turn the brow wax machine on. Turn the hand warmer machine on. Make sure you sweep the front back. Waiting area bathroom behind the register. Turn on towel warmer. Make sure that you have the accurate count for the details for the day. Restock soap in the bathroom, restocked paper towels, restocked toilet paper cleaning, dry erase checklists themselves. Taking no man, I was on a roll. I was on a roadside mop. That’s Monday. Only A. There’s too much. How about this? How about this?
Gather Google reviews. Deal what? The employee who pretends to be sick, but it’s not. Do what? The employee who’s mad about something and do with the employee who can’t get to work because my car doesn’t work. Deal with the employee who wants to file unemployment as a result of not being promoted. Deal with the customer who is running behind. Deal with the customer that’s upset that we made a mistake. Uh, do what the customer who is happy to deal with the week do it. The underline deal. Yeah. The deal with the roof that was leaking during December 23rd when the roof cave. You never know. There’s always something, and I’m telling you, it was soon as the emotional thing started happening. You won’t remember anything. Has there ever been like a week or you’ve ever managed where there hasn’t been some form of emotional blow out from somebody? No.
Easy answer. Every week there’s somebody. I mean just recently. This is a fun example recently for elephant in the room. We had a person on our team that I praised publicly, which I like to do for doing a good job and when I praise them for doing a good job that caused another person to reach out to me and to tell me that I was a bad person for never praising them because they had been working there for over two months and they’d never been priced. Effective coaching absolutely has the ability to transform your business, but sadly most business coaching has developed into half baked entrepreneur therapy sessions.

demonstrated the power of effective business coaching. Consider Eric Schmidt, the former executive chairman of Google who hired Bill Campbell to be his business coach. She meant, described his initial thoughts about coaching and his relationship with Campbell and fortune. He said, how could a coach advise me if I’m the best person in the world at this, but that’s not what a coach does. They have to watch you and get you to be your best. Once I realized that I could trust him and that he could help me with perspective, I decided this was a great idea. There are an estimated 53,000, 53,000, 300 business coaches according to the international coach federation. Now
Chubb, there are so many business coaches. They’ve now started their own international coaching federation, which I am not a part of. I want to make sure we’re getting this that mean. Well, no. Let’s check this out. Bill Bellacheck is the most successful nfl coach of the past 25 years. Thirty years and you know, he’s the only coach who does not participate in the national football league. Coaches, associates. Do you know that? Just because you’ve told me. Yes, but I’m just telling you. Look that up. He’s the only coach who’s not a member of the association. When I started DJ connection.com, I was the only Dj in Oklahoma that I knew who was not a member of the American Dj Association because I’m a real freaking entrepreneur. I’m not going to sit around and share my ideas with other djs here. This is how it would go. Chip, if I did share my ideas a clay.

So what tips would I possibly share? Tip number two tip. I got a bonus tip. If you guys want to go to the bottom of a pool, I have put a scratch and sniff sticker down there, but you can’t fully unlock the smell, the million dollar smell until you’ve sniffed for 19 consecutive minutes. And to help you guys, I’m going to attach a concrete shoes to your body’s pushing it in there because I wanted to destroy my competition. I don’t want to hang out with them, meet them, get to know them. That’s ridiculous. So again, the International Coaching Federation, it’s 53,000 business coaches who gives a crap but continue to.
So how do you know which ones are the real deal? As with hiring a cosmetic surgeon and auto mechanic or a homebuilder, it’s wise to do
research following. Oh, two areas. I should do my research to verify that somebody is real.
Surely it can’t be serious. I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley,
back to you. Chip, check out the testimonials. So really dive into the content of what people are saying. Search for video reviews if possible, and listen to what former clients have to say. Are they talking about feelings or are they sharing the real results that their business coach helped them generate? It’s possible to love your business coach, but also be broke.
So I’m going to play a notable quotable from a, uh, a testimonial from a real client that we’ve really helped. And this particular company’s called Papa gallows. Andrew’s worked with them. Marshall’s worked with them. They’re based in Florida, it’s called Papa gallows, p, a p, p a g a l l o s they have a real business in the real estate of Florida with real employees and we’ve helped them with the group interview and optimizing their website and their sales are dramatically growing and they’re having money in their bank than they’ve ever had in their life, and then I’m going to play it back to back testimony. I’m going to play you a another testimonial from Roy who owns a company called the garage and our auto specialists.com based in Tulsa, who I’ve really worked with. He’s one of my personal clients and he’ll. He will explain to you how I was actual sales are up.
Now. I will tell you this, as a coach, you wanna, make sure that you get this thrive nation. Make sure you get this. The only thing that I don’t care about as your business coach is whether you like me. In fact, if you do like me, you probably don’t have a future together because if you do like me, what that means that you won’t respect me and you will want to then have me not tell you real things, so as long as you don’t like me and you recommend that you understand that my relationship with you is to help you grow your business. Just like you can’t be your kid’s friends. I’m not trying to become your friend. I’m trying to help grow your business. So my only concern that I. The only. The only thing I never think about it all. You say when you’re helping grow a business, what do you think about?
I think about your workflow, your sales, your processes, your hiring or firing or managing your systems, but the one thing I don’t think about ever is whether you like me. So when you listen to these testimonials, they usually aren’t saying clay’s my friend and we have ice cream together and we went on a cruise together. We do need to go to camp together. We dropped, we do trust falls together. We do a lot. We do paint balling together. No, because the moment you become my friend is when you don’t listen anymore. So I am trying to coach clients so my clients say that they love me or they respect me, but I don’t want. I don’t care. It doesn’t need to be a likability and the other form of coaching is like, so how are you guys doing? Hey Man. And they focus entirely on being liked.
I’m focused on being loved and respected. I’m not focused on being liked. I if you’re like me, that if that’s part, if that’s part of the deal. If you say I do like you, that’s fine. I’m not mad if you like me, but I’m like, that’s what my goal. My goal is not to make you like him. You just like an NBA head coach is not focused on the good nba coaches aren’t trying to be buddies with the players, so hope this. I don’t focus on aligning your feelings with my feelings and then talking about how you feel about how I feel. I don’t care how you feel. I know that when you have more money in the bank and you have time freedom and financial freedom, you’ll feel however you need to feel at that point, but until then we’ve got to shut up and execute the proven path. That’s what has to happen to him. Unfortunately, a holding people accountable requires pissing people off. Sometimes all the time, and as a coach, sometimes that’s what you gotta do to make sure things are getting done because there’s nobody else in our way to piss you off. Oh No, not at all, but it’s. By the way, I don’t like the base of your baby.
You smelled it. It’s rude to install the baby. I gotTa let you know I’m, I hate to slap your baby, but I got a ticket Gimme that Gimme that baby. Let me slap it. That’s not our goal, but we, we, we, I’m just telling you, it’s part of it. If we, if we assign you the action step of write a thousand words of content for all 12 of your pages and you don’t do it, I can’t help you because you have to have an intuitive knowledge of home building or whatever your industry is and you need to write a thousand words, then my team could embed the keywords, but you have to write the original words and when you copy content from another website or simply abdicate it by giving it to somebody on your team who then copies of the content. When you don’t get testimonials and you’re supposed to, when you don’t call your leads, I can’t help you unless you do it.
So I could say, hey, it’s okay buddy. So what? It’s not okay. It’s not freaking okay. You’re failing because you’re not implementing the proven system. That’s why shut. Most of my clients have been with me for years and they say, you’re the only person in my life who’s real. Right? I remember a clay stairs. Uh, um, Sean, your, your partner in Boston with a leadership initiative. Clay, one time pulled me aside and he goes, I gotta tell you something. I said, what? He goes here, my ass man, and ran away. I’m thinking, I’m like them when this conversation’s going, but continue what? What’s going on? He says, you are an ass. And I said, continue. He goes, seriously, like you are that guy in my life who kicks my butt and I need, I needed that. I do need that. So I got referrals. It was so funny when I started coaching.
This is probably 12 years ago, 13 years ago, I remember getting multiple referrals from people and this is what I’d pick up the phone, call the person poop. Hey, this is clay. I got a call. Uh, one of your friends told me that you were looking for a business coach and they said that you wanted me to help you. And then the people would say, yeah, we heard you like a mean guy. A lot nicer on the phone. And I’m like, I told you, yeah, they referred you, but they said just a warning. You’re a mean person because what happens in our culture is anytime someone hold you accountable, people always throw the caveat. They say, I don’t want to be a bad guy, but I don’t think Jesus Christ is a bad guy, but he definitely flipped over the tables and the church because the guys would, with the guys, the people wouldn’t stop selling things in the church.
I don’t think that I’m a Judeo Christian. I think God’s a bad guy because he kicked Adam and eve out of the garden. Uh, I don’t, I don’t process the, you know, the, the Buddhist religion as being mean because explained that good Karma, bad Karma. I don’t necessarily believe in that, but I am saying that if you sow bad things, bad things come back. And it’s not mean because they’re telling you right in the wrong level. I don’t think police officers or police officers are mean because they hold you accountable to the speed limit. I don’t think that referees are mean because they say you’re out of bounds. So I, again, I, I don’t feel like I’m the bad guy at all, but if that’s the way our culture processes it, then that’s fine. Chip, continue reading this excerpt from the Forbes article that we recently wrote for Forbes magazine.
So the second area you want to do is verify claims. Uh, too often business coaching material is taught by coaches who have never grown a business other than their program. So everything they teach is theoretical at best, and they may have no idea if it actually, if it will actually work for you and your business. Does the program seem too good to be true? If it’s promising overnight success or huge profits that seem unrealistic and unsustainable, it probably is. A business coach can change your life and your business, but it’s important to take the time to vet your coach. Make sure you do your due diligence to find the program that is right for you. Now want to make sure all the listeners understand this idea, the thrive time show a program that we have developed. Why it works and works so well is that we have a curriculum called start here, that every single person who coached coaches for us teachers, we all teach from the start here book and it’s all sided with documented wins and case studies.
And the reason why we do that is because there’s simply not enough of me to go around. I have a huge track record of success as a coach and there’s not enough meat. So to make it affordable for you, we wanted to make our program costs you $10 per hour. So, uh, think about this Jason. How many people will, will you be working with today and what store will you be working with today for elephant in the room? Men’s grooming lounge. The one at 91st and Yale and stylist wise I’ll be working with eight and I’ll have an assistant. So nine total. Okay. So let’s just do some math on this. Eight stylists, all the roommate can 12 an hour. So 12 times eight, right? And then we multiply that times. They’re all working like a nine hour shift, eight hour shift or how many hours does everybody work today?
Today there’ll be eight. Eight. Okay. So that means to today’s payroll, what I’m paying today, it would be 768. And then you add an end, the taxes, one location, and you got the manager. So this will be. So my payroll today for that store will end up topping out at about $1,700 today. All right. $1,700 today. Um, another example is like when we do our all staff meeting on Friday, I think all in a everybody who was there probably about 60 folks that are there, 50 folks, right? And all of them on average after taxes and a workman’s comp, they’re all making an average of 17 in our, you know what I mean? So if you take a 17, let’s say after Workman’s comp, payroll taxes, so 17 and our time, let’s just say it’s conservatively 50 people. That means that that meeting alone costs me $850 minimum, you know, people don’t think about that.
And then my lease for the building is 27,000. If you take 27,000, you divide that by a 30 day. I’m right there. So that’s $900 plus the eight slash 70. So it costs me to have that meeting. Seventeen hundred and $70. Which is cool because that’s more than our entire coaching program costs our clients in a month. Right. And so you get all of that graphic designers, photographers, videographers, search engine experts, all of it. And a point man to manage the project for less money that would cost you to even host one training for my team or hire one $10 an hour into an hour per $10 per hour employee. Let’s say you hired a $10 per hour employee so they make $10 an hour and you hire them to work four point three weeks a month, right? And they work 40 hours every week. That would cost you $1,720.
Then when you add in the payroll tax, then that would cost you. So you’re at a minimum of $2,100 to hire one $10 an hour employee. So if you’re somebody out there who can afford to hire a $10 an hour employee, I would recommend you’d hire a super mutant employee known as your thrive time show, business coach. They can do everything they got all the superpowers, they got all the moves, very few employees are going to hire. They can say, yeah, I can knock out a video for you this week and I’ll optimize your site and manage your online ads for you. And by the way, do you have any strategic help you need? I mean, a lot of them come to work 10 minutes late, leave 10 minutes early and they know nothing about anything and sleep on the job somewhere. It’s. So again, uh, is business coaching as an industry overall crap?
Yes. Are there some glimmering and, or are there some edible pieces of court and the Puke known as business coaching? Yes, in the vomit known as business coaching. There are some edible pieces of corn out there, but I couldn’t find any edible pieces of corn. So I decided to make my own and sprinkle my own corn into the vomit because I couldn’t find any corn out there. And so there’s really only three programs that I respect out there in the world for business coaching. Here’s Gino Wickman in his program. Traction. It is a great program. And I know Peach Patel, one of my friends who have built digital tutors and he sold that company for over $500, million dollars. The business is worth over $500,000,000 today. I think he sold it. He had upfront cash, like 60 million bucks. He got ownership of this company called pluralsight, pluralsight.
It’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars today. Upfronting got like 60 something million dollars. Big Transaction. He hired attraction to be his coach, but I know that program is like eight grand a month, seven grand a month for what he was paying. And he was happy about it. He was happy about it. And by the way, he had a team of graphic designers. He had hit a team of over a couple hundred employees. I mean here you had a couple hundred employees. So he didn’t need videography photography, web development, so his. If you’re needing Gino Wickman, then I wouldn’t be a good fit for you. That’s not, that’s not me. If you’ve got a 400 employees and you want to take it to the next level and you don’t mind paying $8,000 a month for executive coaching, you would not like our program because that’s not what we do. Then there’s the math program.
The math program is a great program for if you have a business that’s doing over a million dollars a year of revenue and you need help strategically identifying your biggest limiting factors, but you don’t need help making print pieces and graphic design and web and it’s a great program and it’s going to run you about three grand a month. You got to sign a contract because they’re busy and they don’t have time to waste with knuckleheads. You want to try a program for 30 days heads. But if you’re a small business owner and you are in that range where you’re saying, I want to grow a business or start a business and I’m willing to stay the course, uh, it’s, it’s a month to month thing, there’s no contract. But if you’re willing to stay the course for a couple of years, then our program is great for you. But there’s just the myth distraction and there’s us and I’ve looked at every other program out there and you might say, but I actually am part of another program and I disagree then that’s fine.
You can get off my podcast, we can part ways as arch rivals, whatever. But the point is, um, I built this system because there wasn’t anything out there. And so you’re getting, when you use our business coaching program, your getting the team chuck the team that we actually use. Yeah, our actual companies. Yeah, we’ll help you. Absolutely. So if you’re out there and you’re saying, is business coaching crap? I’d say by and large, yes. But in the vomit of business coaching, there are some kernels of corn and we are one of those three kernels of corn delicious.
