Business Coach : Live A Full Life
-Hey, Thrivers. This is Paige Taylor. And today, we’re going to be sitting down with business coach Clay Clark and Jim Cathcart, and they’re talking about success. How fully are you living now?
Jim was listed as one of the top 100 minds on personal development by Leadership Excellence Magazine, and he’s also a recipient of the prestigious Golden Gavel Award for public speaking and communication. So today, Jim’s going to help you answer some important life questions including– how fully am I living, and how much real quality living do I do? Now, these are some questions that you may want to know the answer to, so let’s get right into it.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
-Jim Cathcart, how are you, my friend?
-I’m happy and ready and looking forward to another session.
-I love it. I’m excited about this.
-OK.
-And today, we are again diving into one of your business coach books.
-OK.
-OK? And we’re going to be focusing on this question–
-You’re making it easy on me.
-Yeah. I feel like–
-I know all of my books.
-I think you might know this topic pretty well.
-Well, let’s hope.
-I’ve got some feeling.
[CHUCKLING]
-We’re going to be talking about this question– how fully are you living now?
-Yeah.
-OK?
-Yeah.
-That’s what we’re discussing today. And I’m going to be pulling some notable quotables from your book–
-OK.
—and kind of asking you to unpack them.
-All right.
-And kind of do a deep dive into them. OK?
-Yeah.
-So let’s dive on in here to this first notable quotable. I’ll just read it. The first one, though– let’s start with just asking and defining– when you want us to ask the question “How fully am I living now,” what’s the purpose of asking that question? Common business coach question.
-Well, think about– the fact that you exist is implication that you should be living fully.
-OK.
-Being alive, there are levels of being alive. And most people seem to go through life at only a partial volume setting.
-Right.
-I mean, you could live so much more.
-Hmm.
-You could get so much more joy. You could give so much more value, but most people just seem to kind of drone through life and do what they were doing last year, what they were doing yesterday, what they’re going to be doing next year.
-Hmm.
-And think of it, I mean, for yourself, Caleb. You’ve got physical capabilities, mental capabilities, social life. You’ve got all the various aspects of you.
-Sure.
-Right? You’ve got your career.
-Mm-hmm.
-Your intellectual interests, your spiritual belief, et cetera. Which one of those is important?
-All of them.
-All of those around are important. Absolutely.
-Yeah. Yeah.
-And they’re vitally important because that’s the essence of being alive.
-Hmm.
-So which one need your attention?
-All of them.
-Yeah. But which one needs your attention now?
-OK. So that’s why now is in there.
-There you go. Yeah. Because it’s the one that you haven’t been paying attention to lately.
-Hmm.
[DINGING]
-So if you look at mental, physical, family, social, spiritual, career, financial, emotional– all the dimensions of your life, you cannot live a balanced life in the sense that you give one-eighth to each of those all the time.
-OK.
-So sometimes, you’re giving, like, 90% of your attention and energy to just one of those.
-Sure.
-And that’s fine because that’s the way people operate.
-Right.
-And that’s the only way you can really excel at anything.
-OK.
-But what about the ones that you’re not expressing or not paying attention to? Well, that’s no problem at first.
-Hmm.
-But let’s say you just don’t pay much attention to your physical fitness or well-being for an extended period of time.
-Sure.
-Then the physical part of your life says, “Excuse me. My turn. Everybody else out of the way.”
-Right.
-“We’re going to the hospital.”
-Right.
-Right?
-Right.
-And so your body takes over and says, “You hadn’t been paying attention to me, dude.”
[SMACKING]
-Yeah.
-Now, you’re going to pay attention.
-Right.
-And the same thing is true for your financial life, for your career, for your– whatever it is. And a business coach can help.
-Mm-hmm.
-Neglect it at your peril.
-Right.
-So I say live fully in all these different areas, but don’t try to get up every morning say, “OK. I’ve got to do this physically, and I’ve got to do this mentally, and I’ve got to”– no.
No. No. No. No. Lay out your day as to what’s important for the day, and dive into that day and give it your full attention in each category as you get to it.
-Hmm.
-But then at the end of the day or the beginning of the next one, back off, reflect, and notice which areas you have not been attending to.
-OK.
-So live fully. Why? Because that’s the value you bring to the world.
-Hmm.
-If you don’t live fully, then I get cheated out of what you could have done.
-Right.
-Could have contributed.
-Right.
-And you get cheated out of the satisfaction of doing it.
-Let me ask you this then. I feel like I might be helping one of the Thrivers here because, for me, I agree with everything you’re saying. This make sense to me.
-Yeah. Well, we’re insiders.
-No. I just–
-Don’t try this at home. We’re professionals.
[LAUGHING]
-No. No. Not at all, but what I’m wondering is– why is it so important or what’s the impact of stopping and actually asking this question?
I guess, like actually sitting down, writing it out, and thinking about. Because is it enough just to watch this episode and be like, “Yeah. I agree with everything you’re saying”?
-No.
-I need to make sure I’m balancing these areas.
-Well, think about traffic. If you’re driving in traffic and you stop because of a traffic signal, is it useful to reflect on where you are in relation to where you’re going or should you just continue to drive in the traffic?
-Hmm. That’s good.
-The same thing in life.
-You’re getting deep on us.
-Yeah.
-This is a mental marination moment right here.
-But it really–
-Just marinate on this moment, guys. Marinate here.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
-So you’re saying you’re going somewhere. You’re at a destination–
-Yeah.
-You’re headed to a destination–
-And by the way, if you don’t have a destination, then none of is going to make sense to you.
-Like, it could be problematic.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
-So that’s why we made such a big deal out of goal setting in other sessions that we’ve done. And also hiring a business coach
-If you haven’t seen the goal-setting episode with Jim, you need to go see it.
-See it.
-Yeah.
