I could keep going if I just thought more about bones. Why, man? Because I loved it. I loved playing the game. I was passionate about it. Started from the bottom, now we’re here Started from the bottom, let me show you how to get this Alright, today we are talking about the MacGyver approach. It’s not about resources, it’s about resourcefulness. Again, we’re talking about the MacGyver approach. It’s not about resources, it’s about resourcefulness. Do you remember who MacGyver was? MacGyver was this 80s TV character. He kind of, I’m just gonna draw what I believe to be MacGyver, but he basically had this this amazing, like it was like this mullet, like this curly mullet back here, he had going on, you know, and he had this thing going on. And then what MacGyver was was somewhat known for is it didn’t matter what the situation was, he could always solve the problem using something that he had in his pocket. So, you know, they would have to like turn on an engine of a car or they would try to, you know, turn a bomb off or something or you know, somehow escape. And whatever he found in his pocket right here was always what he could he could save the day with. He could always just save the day with whatever’s in his pocket. He pulls it out of his pocket magically. Boom. He says, ah, whatever is in my pocket, this is what I have. This is going to save the day. And he could save us from any situation using just whatever he found in his pocket. It was unbelievable. He always was just resourceful. He could take duct tape and somehow power up a truck, or he could take gum and somehow use the gum to keep the bomb from exploding. He was very resourceful. He was like one of those guys on the Survivor shows where you leave the guy in the middle of nowhere and he somehow takes two coconuts and builds a nuclear reactor and makes his way back home. I mean, it’s crazy, but that’s what MacGyver was all about. Now, in entrepreneurship, being resourceful is absolutely essential. And so today we’re gonna lay out the principles needed for the MacGyver approach, because it’s not about resources, it’s about the resourcefulness. So one, principle number one, is only the resourceful survive. Oh man, I started the DJ company, DJ Connection, and we did, at the peak, you know, thousands and thousands of weddings per year and corporate events. But I remember it was Thanksgiving of 2000, maybe 2003, 2004, somewhere on that range, and we had one of the guys who was a very, pretty well-paid guy, college graduate. graduate, he couldn’t figure out how to install shelving in our mini storage. For whatever reason, he just couldn’t install the shelving. But before he could couldn’t find the install the shelving, he couldn’t find the shelving. So I put it on his list. I said, hey, I would like for you to go out there and find some shelving that we could put on the shelves to hold our DJ equipment. I’ll just give you some context. The average piece of DJ equipment was about as wide as this podium. And it weighed about 80 pounds. It’s the item we call the gig rig. And it would have to sit on this shelf. And the gig rig was like this, and it would have to sit on the shelf. And I bet you the thing weighed about 60 pounds, all right? And we’d have shelving that we’d put the gig rig on, and then we’d have shelving where we’d put the speakers on it as well. So the speakers would go on the shelves, and the gig rig would go on the shelves and all the other equipment but that’s how we kept it organized and before I sold the business we had about 45 systems that we had. Well it’s about 2003 and I just bought these new systems and I bought I think we were going from like five systems to eight systems so I built for three new systems. And all the guy had to do was to find the shelving and then to build the shelving and to put it up. So I get a call. I’m in Houston for Thanksgiving. I answer the phone. Hello, this is Clay. Yeah. Hey, Clay, I can’t find any shelves. I can’t put the shelves up. I wasn’t good at holding people accountable didn’t really understand some of the systems and processes I understand today So I hopped in my car and I literally drove all the way to Tulsa from Houston leaving my wife in Houston by herself for Thanksgiving so that I could get home to fix this because we had equipment showing up and failure was not an option and so what did I do I Went to the store just like he went to the store and I didn’t find any shelving and then I went to the hardware store I didn’t find any shelving that I needed and so I bought some wood and I bought a circular saw and I bought a hammer and I bought some nails and I bought some phone cord phone cord phone wiring and I built these shelves by myself, having never used a circular saw before. And I put it all together, and it looked terrible. And I used phone cord to hold the shelving firmly against the wall. I used phone cord. And that is how I built the system. And do you know that those shelves were still in use for almost three years? They never did break. Why do I say that? It’s not because I’m a genius, but it’s because I had to be resourceful. And it’s so different being an entrepreneur than working for one. You have got to be resourceful if you are going to survive. If you’re not resourceful, you just can’t, you can’t make it. Okay? You just, you’re not going to be successful. The next principle here is we have to be intelligent. So we’re going to define the definition of intelligence. Now Napoleon Hill is the best-selling success author who wrote the book Think and Grow Rich, which is perhaps the number one self-help book of all time. And Napoleon Hill defines success as this. He says it’s the ability to get what you want without violating the rights of others. Now I’m paraphrasing here, but what he’s saying is the ability to get what you want without violating the rights of others. Meaning you’re not stealing or anything, but you’re getting what you want. I never thought of his intelligence as the ability to get what I want. Now we’ve got guys, we have one guy right now who works with our company who company, who can always find the answer to any problem he has. It doesn’t matter what problem it is. He can figure it out. If it’s an online promotion, if it’s a website to be built, if it’s software to install, if it’s a speaker to fix, if it’s an iPad that breaks, he can find the solution because he has what I would call what Napoleon Hill would call intelligence. He has the ability to get what we want without violating the rights of others. He’s resourceful. And if you’re watching this today, and maybe you struggle with being resourceful, you’re going to have to have somebody on your team that is resourceful, okay? And when you build a business, you’re going to have to surround yourself with people that are resourceful, especially in a small business. And I look at small businesses today, what you see a lot of times is you see the old Michael Jordan story when Michael was a rookie and he was in a sophomore year of the NBA. Michael Jordan basically would score 35 points a game and the team would lose all the time. And the other four guys would just kind of stand around and watch Michael Jordan score points. They’d watch him be resourceful. He could go up and under, he could go for the dunk, he could go for the reverse dunk, he could go for the free throw, he could go for the three-point shot, he could drive to the lane. Michael had all these different moves to score, and these four guys didn’t have any moves to score. And they lost a lot. Now as Michael started winning more, they had Michael, they had Scottie Pippen. So Scottie Pippen over here, guess what? Scottie Pippen was resourceful. Phil Jackson, his coach was resourceful, and he found a way to get the most out of the different players on the team. And that’s what allowed the team to win consistently. And in business, I see it all the time. You see these owners who are very resourceful, and they’ve surrounded themselves with people who are not. And I’m just telling you, we have to be resourceful if we are going to grow a successful business. We have to be intelligent. The third is we have to increase our network. Okay, this is huge. We have to move to a network with a higher net worth. All right, so we have to increase the net worth of our network. Let’s look at this real quick. Let’s say that you’re John or you’re Sherry and you are broke as represented by a down financial arrow. You are broke. Well as a general rule I grew up without money. If you’re poor you You tend to do what? you tend to You hang out with people who have a lot of money or do you hang out with people who don’t have money? Well, if you’re poor you usually hang out with people that are also poor Right. So when Sherry’s in a bind and she goes to John and says John, could you help me? Can John help? Can John help Sherry? No, because John doesn’t have money either. But if Sherry will start surrounding herself with people who have financial success as indicated by this upward arrow, is it possible that when Sherry’s in a bind that these other people can help her? True. Is it possible that these people can send Sherry business to grow her business? Yes, how do you do this? This seems like a very, you know, great kind of a Narnia sort of a, you know, unicorn sort of idea, like, hey, well, what we’ll do is we’ll just surround ourself with people that have more money and then we’ll be more successful. No, no, I’m gonna give you the specifics of how this works, okay? So when I started the DJ company, this is a DJ connection. I went out there and I surrounded myself with people who had a low net worth and I suffered for it. But at a certain point I decided to change the game. So here’s what I started doing. I reached out to the Renaissance Hotel. And this is per the ideas put in my brain from the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I built a thing called a mastermind. Okay? A mastermind. So, I surrounded myself. I went up to the Renaissance Hotel. I said, hey, Renaissance Hotel, I would love to DJ for you for free. I actually talked to a lady named Dawn and a lady named Tricia. And I said, I would love to DJ for your organization for free in exchange for you guys referring me when you have the ability to do so. And they said, well, we’d have to see a DJ first. Long story short, I went out there, DJed for them for free, they liked it, they started referring me business. Then I went out to a local store called Fashiano’s. This is a bridal store. It sells high-end gowns. I did the same thing. Then I went out to a travel company called World Travel. Then I went out to another hotel called the Crown Plaza. Then I went out to a jeweler in the mall. Jewelry. Alright, then I went to a high-end florist and I went to a photographer. Now over time what began to happen? What began to happen is these people I pretty much DJ’d for free. I did for all of them at one point. I did one free party for almost everyone on here’s a family. But over time they all started referring me what? Business. And then the overall average of their net worth became my net worth. Do you know that if you take the average net worth of the people that you network with and you find the average of that, if you find the average net worth of the people you network with, you know that almost always determines your paycheck? Like the people that you hang out with, if you add up all their net worth and you find the average, that’s usually yours. Why? Because iron sharpens iron. Great people push you to become great. The Renaissance Hotel did like every week four and five weddings, every week. I was struggling to do four or five a month. These people, they can refer me more business than I could possibly think about. But we have to get out of our comfort zone. So some of us right now are living in a rough area. Some of us are networking with the wrong people. We’ve got to find a way to get in to the right network. You have to do it. You have to be where the right network is. Do you know I found myself going to country clubs? I had never been to a country club. I was going to country clubs, meeting these people for lunches. Do you know that I started showing up at rotary groups, chamber of commerce groups, trade association events? You know, it got to the point that I actually started my own association called the Tulsa Bridal Association because I wanted to find a way to keep these referral groups going. I had to build an association of people who could help me grow my business. You’re going to have to do the same thing because if you want to increase your net worth, you’re going to have to increase the net worth of your network. Now the fourth principle here is we do not want to get stuck. When I say don’t get stuck, what am I talking about? I’m talking about a lot of people say, I love your idea about building a network, but I just don’t know where to start. Well, one, email us over here at info at thrive15.com, and we will gladly make an episode to help answer any questions that you have. We’re going to try to give you the best content on the planet to answer questions like that. But don’t get stuck. Don’t think like, you know, someday I’m going to do it. be just right. You must act now. What? Napoleon Hill says the time will never be just right. You must act now. Too many of us, too many of us are getting stuck. We don’t know what to do, so we do nothing. Now, when we were raising venture capital for Thrive, do you know what I did? I made a list of 400 venture capital firms and people that I wanted to contact about Thrive. And do you know, I didn’t know what to say. I mean, I had an idea of what Thrive was. I didn’t know how to say it. I didn’t know when to say it. I didn’t know who to say it to. I didn’t know exactly how to approach them. I didn’t know what. So what I did is I started taking massive action. So I made a list of 400 people. That was step one. Then I started calling, right? And you know, when I started calling, what I found? Everybody kept asking me when I was calling them they all kept asking for a pitch deck. Well what’s a pitch deck? I had no idea what a pitch deck was so then I googled the word pitch deck and I found a book written by a guy named Draper about raising venture capital. And you know I read that book and while reading that book I heard him reference the concept of angel investing. So then I found a book called Pitch Hacks written by the guy who AngelList. And you know I started calling using the pitch deck and the system laid out by Draper and the presentation system by the AngelList founder and the author of Pitch Hacks. And then you know from there I ultimately got another book called Pitch Anything by Oren Klaff. And then I heard about that as I was struggling with my pitch. I did have now my pitch deck I didn’t understand venture capital. I did have a good presentation, but I still was struggling So I got a book called pitch anything and then from there. Do you know that that led to the first? Investor And do you know that the first investor then referred us to ten Investors then referred us to 10 investors. And do you know that today, Thrive is what it is because of the constant action. But do you know that if I wouldn’t have made my list of my first 400, and I wouldn’t have started just calling, then I wouldn’t have learned about Pitch Deck, and I wouldn’t have learned about the need for one. I wouldn’t have Googled it. I wouldn’t have read Draper’s book. If I hadn’t read Draper’s book, I wouldn’t have discovered about pitching and the importance of it. And it wouldn’t have led me to angel list.com into a book called pitch hacks. If I hadn’t read pitch hacks, I wouldn’t know about the book pitch anything because I wouldn’t have been looking for how to pitch anything. And then I wouldn’t have landed my first investor. And had I not landed my first investor, I wouldn’t land the 10 investors. And had I not landed those 10 investors, I wouldn’t be talking to you. That’s how it works. You cannot get stuck. You can’t get stuck. Getting stuck is probably the worst thing that we as entrepreneurs could do. It’d be better to kind of be fighting with the wheel on the bus with a flat tire than it would be to try to steer a bus that’s not moving because you can’t steer a parked bus. Now the next thing we have to focus on here is the 80-20 rule. The 80-20 rule. If you’re going to be resourceful, you still need to be resourceful in the right areas. You need to focus on making sure percent of your time on the 20% of the items that you do best. So if you have a list right here of a hundred things that need to be done, you need to find the 20% that you can do better than anybody else and that’s what you need to focus on. All these other items, we can delegate those to somebody else. But we need to focus our time on the things that we do best. So for Thrive, what do I do? I write curriculum, I build culture, staff training materials, I raise venture capital, I attend the meetings and lead the meetings, I do media and PR interviews. Those are the things that I do best. But what do I delegate? I delegate a lot of things. I delegate the video editing. I delegate the filming of the videos. I delegate the audio systems. I delegate building. I don’t build out the actual sets. I delegate the coding of the website. I delegate the PR. I delegate the marketing. I delegate so many things. But that’s what I do. That’s what you have to do. We have to be resourceful. It’s not about being resourceful. It’s not about having the resources. It’s about being resourceful. So just to help you and just to review, I want to make sure that we recap these points because I think if we fail to hit one of these steps… Now again, I’ve spent… you know, I’m 33 now. I’ve spent the better part of the last 15 years studying successful people, growing companies, traveling all around the world, interviewing top-level entrepreneurs, meeting billionaires and millionaires, that’s what I do. I’ve put hours and hours and hours of research into this to help you, and I wanna make sure we do not forget these. So here we go. One, only the resourceful survive. You have to be resourceful. You’ve gotta be resourceful. Two, you have to be intelligent. So one, once again, you have to be resourceful. Only those survive. Two, you have to be intelligent. And what is intelligence? It’s the ability to get what you want without violating the rights of others. Point number three is you have to increase your net worth of your network. network has to go up, doesn’t it? It has to go what way? It has to go up. The net worth of your network has to go up. You do not want to get stuck, right? You never want to get stuck because getting stuck is bad. And as I demonstrated on that venture capital example for you, if you get stuck, you can’t do anything. But if you just stay unstuck you’re gonna run into one lamp post in the fog. It’s foggy out there, right? It’s foggy It’s foggy world We don’t know what to do We don’t know where to go. We’re in the fog. But if we just keep going through the fog, we’re eventually gonna see Oh a lamp post and Then walk some more and we’ll see another lamp post if we can just get from lamp post to lamp post in the fog, we are absolutely going to make it. The next is the 80-20 rule. You want to spend 80% of your time focused on the 20% that you do the best. 80% of your time focused on the 20% of the things that you do better than anybody else. And the final one is you want to get the right people, right, get the right people on the bus because people who do not share your vision are creating division. That’s not what we can deal with when we’re starting a company. Am I helping you? Yeah. All right. So again, we want to encourage you to take these action steps and immediately apply them. We are super excited about you and your business, but I want to tell you again, if we struggle with being resourceful with the little resources we have, it doesn’t matter how many resources you get in the future because you won’t be able to make it. Only the resourceful survive and thrive. Remember, it’s not about being, about being this person who has all the resources in the world, it’s about being resourceful with the tools you have. And one of the tools that you have when you start a business is you have very little time, because time is your most important asset. Right? So because it’s our most important asset, we need to value it. And we’ve got to spend 80% of our time focusing on 20% of things that we do better than anybody else. And so the final principle we all have to learn when it comes to being resourceful and not just having the most resources. When we start a company or we grow one, most of us don’t have unlimited resources. We have to get, the final step here, is we have to get the right people on the bus. What does that mean? What that means is that we do not want to have people on the team that really shouldn’t be on the bus. So here’s an example. If we have a bus, all right, this is my bus. I realize that my bus drawing skills could be enhanced, but here’s the bus, right? You got this bus. Bus. And this bus is going to Des Moines. Have you ever been to Des Moines? Iowa? The tourism capital of America? Iowa, the place that’s famous for… Have you ever been to Iowa? The point is, Iowa is a place where, if you’re going to Iowa, I’ve been to Iowa, there are some great people in Iowa, but if you are not going to Iowa for a specific purpose, you do not wanna go there by accident, right? Because there’s not a whole lot to see and do unless you have people that you know and things that you’re trying to do specifically. So if the bus is going to Des Moines and you have the wrong people on the bus, are they going to start getting cranky as they get closer and they say, are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? They want to get off the bus. Are they even going to want to be in Iowa? No. So we have to get the right people on the bus, the right people who want to get to that destination. Now I’ll tell you what, if you load up this bus with a bunch of Iowa fans here, University of Iowa, you get these people on a bus headed to Des Moines to go celebrate the great Iowa. Are they going to be excited? Yes, because they’re from Iowa and they want to go to that destination. So some of us are having this issue right now where we are hiring people to work for us who do not want to be going they don’t want to go to the same place you want to go to. They don’t want to go there and so we’re hiring people to say hey come on the bus we’re going to Iowa and they’re saying I don’t want to go to Iowa but yet we keep them on the bus. So just yesterday just yesterday I was talking to a young woman on the phone and she says one of my managers doesn’t want to get to work at seven. This business is open from seven o’clock until five. To be a manager, you have to get to work at seven, because that’s required, that’s what time they open, you have to be there from seven to five, it just has to happen. And the manager says, I don’t want to go to Iowa, I don’t want to work at seven. Can I just can we and they let the manager literally suggested, can we just open up the shop at a later time and maybe close at a later time. And that way, you know, it’s more conducive for my schedule. No, the company’s not going to where you want to go. This lady literally wanted to adjust the hours of the shop so that she could be home to participate in a youth sporting event. So this person wants to go let’s say to Louisiana. Nothing wrong with Louisiana but there’s a big difference between New Orleans and Iowa. Iowa’s over here, New Orleans is right here. There’s a big difference. So we have to say, hey you know what you want to you want you want to get off you want to go to New Orleans? Yeah, I do. Okay, you say well, hey, you want to kindly, you know step off the bus You got the little steps on the bus, right? You say go ahead hop off the bus here and we’ll let you go So we get her off the bus and then she hops on another bus that goes to Louisiana Nothing wrong with that but we’ve got to be on a bus go into Des Moines filled with a bunch of people who are big University of Iowa fans if we’re going to have success. In your business, the people who are on your bus have to be sold out and committed and excited about your vision. If they are not excited about your vision, they are creating dissension and division. If they are not about your vision, they are creating what? Division. Does that make sense? Am I helping you? If somebody on your team right now in your company is not about your vision, they are creating division. All right? And division will absolutely destroy your business and your culture. So it’s very important that as we are a good steward of our resources, because we’re resourceful, if we’re resourceful with the little, if we’re being resourceful with the little, little capital we have, and the little staff we have, and then the small business that we’re trying to grow, then we have to make sure that we are being very resourceful when it comes to the people we have on the team. We can’t afford to be spending time with the wrong people on our team. JT, do you know what time it is? Um, 410. It’s it’s Tebow time in Tulsa, Oklahoma, baby.
