So many different times in my life, I’ve played with broken or hurt things, broken foot, broken leg, broken hand, broken arm, broken sternum, broken collarbone. I could keep going if I just thought more about bones. Why, man? Because I loved it. I loved playing the game. I was passionate about it. One of the reasons I even get encouraged at seeing all of you here, you know why I get encouraged by that is because you could be anywhere doing a lot of different things, but you chose to be here Some shows don’t need a celebrity narrator to introduce the show But this show does in a world filled with endless opportunities Why would two men who have built 13 multi-million dollar businesses? five hours per day to teach you the best practice business systems and moves that you can use. Because they believe in you. And they have a lot of time on their hands. This started from the bottom, now they’re here. It’s the Thrive Time Show starring the former U.S. Small Business Administration’s Entrepreneur of the Year, Clay Clark, and the entrepreneur trapped inside an optometrist’s body. Dr. Robert Zunich. Two men, eight kids, co-created by two different women. Thirteen multi-million dollar businesses. We started from the bottom, now we’re here. We started from the bottom, and I’ll show you how to get here. Started from the bottom, now we’re here. We started from the bottom, now we’re here to climb Started from the bottom, now we’re at the top Teaching people systems to get what we got Colton Dixon’s on the hoops, I break down the books She’s bringing some wisdom and the good looks As the father of five, that’s why I’m alive So if you see my wife and kids, please tell them hi It’s the C and T up on your radio And now 3, 2, 1, here we go! We started from the bottom, now we’re here to climb Started from the bottom, let me show you how to get this Alright Thrivers, today we are talking about the principles of a successful website, and specifically we’re talking about how do I pick a domain for my website. Okay, so the goal of this training we’re talking about today, Jason and Jose, is to answer the common questions about setting up a successful website, and really how to go out there and to pick a domain for the website. So Stuart, as we get going here, when you’re picking a domain that’s related to your brand, I think a lot of people ask a lot of times on Thrive, they’ll say, well, how do I decide what domain to choose? So I’m going to go through the checklist of all the different things you want to, all the factors you want to consider. And if I’m missing something, let me know. And Jose, you’re representing the thrivers from coast to coast, from country to country. You might have some questions that maybe, if we’re not getting into the, if we’re missing something. OK, so here we go. One, when you’re picking a domain, you want to reinforce the brand name. Stu, what are you talking about? Right, so Barbie Cookies. Yeah. We often talk about that brand, right? Yep. Their domain name is barbiecookies.com. If you can go after that domain name that is your brand name, that is ideal. You want to create that name recognition. Now I see often where we’ll work with a I’m thinking years ago, we worked with a staffing company in Texas and the name of the company was, I’m just making up an example, but the name of the company maybe is like Smith Employment Services. But the actual domain they chose was like findanemployeeindallas.com. You’re saying if you can reinforce the two, that would be ideal? The two together, exactly. Exactly. Okay, Jose, are you tracking? Yeah, that makes sense. Okay, now the second thing here is emphasize your city or region. Right. Now, I guess a good example would be, we have a photography company called Epic Photos Dallas. And that’s great because it has Epic and it has the word photos and Dallas in it. Am I missing something here? What’s kind of some things where you see as a web guru, where you see people getting this wrong consistently? Well, if your company’s gonna grow, if you’re gonna go national, having a city on it may not be the best move. But everyone starts small. That’s the whole idea, right? A small business, you start small. So if you can localize to a city or region, if you have a retail place or whatever, add that city to the domain name. You’re more likely to get your domain name if the city is in the domain name. But if you get bigger and you get national, that’s not gonna work for you necessarily. So you need to consider the long game too and having a domain that doesn’t have the city in it. Does that make sense, guys? Yeah, yeah. What about for somebody, you’ve highlighted this off camera with me in the past. If somebody has a product that they’re selling, obviously, like online, and they want to redirect to their website, what do you recommend there? I think we can cover the steps, maybe hit on it in this training. Sure. I’m not sure how in-depth we’ll get here, but I will say this, Nike, for example, is a huge global brand. And so Nike.com, just simple, short and sweet. Well they’re not necessarily going to have domain names for every product that they have. And they’re not going to have necessarily city names in their domains because they’re so huge. That right there is one thing we’re hitting on. We see a lot of thrivers who do this. They have five products and they have this desire to build a separate website for every product. And Jason and I are always pushing back and going, hey, just give one brand for the entire to encompass every item you offer. And then put all the items underneath that. There’s a whole lot of reasons to do it for search engine, for brand awareness, etc. But can you do me a favor, man? Can you Google something up here? If we Google Tulsa mortgages, I do work with some consulting clients here in Tulsa. Why? Because I’m selfish and I like to not leave Tulsa if possible. You’re the most humblest man in the world. Yeah, but currently I’ve tracked it. Right now I am the most humble. Yes, yes, yes. Now if you look here and you type in Tulsa Mortgage, the company that comes up top is Tulsa-Mortgages.com. Now I want to walk the Thrivers through this. They decided to choose a name that emphasizes their city or region. The second point here, okay, and Guess what they come up top in Google largely because of the domain itself so good and click on the first one Please so are you saying that they’re just they’re dominating because of that They have chosen a name that is the keyword and therefore they are going to do very well I see in Tulsa right for mortgages now to Jason’s point if we they became Dallas mortgages calm unless they were able to secure Dallas mortgages.com, they would probably not do as well. Not probably, they definitely wouldn’t unless they had a lot of content related to that subject. But when you’re choosing the domain, you want to reinforce your brand name. Now this one right here, it’s called Prime Lending. I’m not ripping these guys. They’re probably good people, probably hardworking humans. But the thing is that their name is not, their brand is not reinforced. So if I could choose a perfect name for these guys, if I did want to do something local, I would say, primelendingtulsamortgage.com. That’s what I would choose. And then on my business card, I would just say like, primelending.com, so that way I could have it redirect. So you would go, if you typed in my domain name of primelending.com for my business card, it’s easy to remember. Primelending.com, what’s the name of your company? Prime Lending. It all ties in together. Exactly. However, my actual domain for Google purposes would be primelendingtulsamortgage.com. So I can get the best of both worlds. So a lot of people don’t take into consideration the Google aspect of the domain name. Absolutely. And a lot of times people just… So make sure we’re getting this clear here. If you can, you want to be your name of your company. So if you could, you’d love to have primelending.com. But if you want to optimize for Google locally, if you did Prime Lending Tulsa Mortgages, that would allow you to do both. And then you’d have a thing called a redirect, which is basically when you click to the domain, if you went to PrimeLending.com, it would forward you over to this site. That’s how you would do it. That’s a great advice. Now, this third move is you want to make it memorable. No, memorable would be like, example would be like, if you said, GoDaddy.com. GoDaddy.com is a memorable name. I’m not saying that it’s the best name in the world, or it’s a bad name, or that every good name needs to involve the references to your father. We could do Yo Daddy. Yeah, I mean, there’s… YoDaddy.com. Yeah, I’m saying, but there’s probably somebody who has that. I mean, but it’s memorable. I’m just saying that branding is all about how do you stick in someone’s head, how do you get the idea stuck in their head so it’s sticky, so it’s memorable. GoDaddy.com is a good example. Any other ideas as far as the memorable quality of anything you could reference or any tips you might have for the Thrivers out there who are going, I don’t know how to make anything memorable. Sure, I mean this is why you have weird web names like google.com, yahoo.com, Instagram, I mean these are weird, these are not common words, right? I find myself often saying, what? What? What? You say something like, lululemon or something? Lululemon, yeah. It’s a lot of these web brands, man, these words don’t exist. They come up with these words because domain names were hard to find. I’m going to give you guys the secret move to doing this. Okay, here we go. So if you type in figures of speech real quick, famous figures of speech. Oh wow. What happens is figures of speech are phrases that people often say. So let’s click on the one that says 17 figures of speech. Okay, so let’s scroll down here just as an example. Okay, it’s a figure of speech and it says in the best of times and the worst of times. If you scroll up real quick, I scroll, oh gosh, oh no. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Okay, the next one you see here, let’s go to hyperbole. It was as big as a mountain. So just as an example, you could say like, big as a mountain haircuts, big as a mountain coffee. You could say, best of times, worst of times. Or you could say, and you keep coming up with different famous figures of speech. For example, the haircut business we started is called Elephant in the Room. And when we came up with that name, all of the song titles are words that, or phrases that people feel like they’ve heard before because they say it, like our name of our company is called Elephant in the Room. And we looked at a list of all these different famous American sayings, and one of them was Elephant in the Room. And we thought, that’d be perfect for a haircut place. It’s memorable, it’s stuck in your head. So if you could pull up here One Republic song titles real quick. One Republic and then… So this is a pop artist, I really enjoy Ryan’s music. He had a new single they dropped yesterday. Really? Oh yeah, good stuff. But you look at the name of the songs, look at them. Counting Stars. Is that not a reference or a thing people talk about? Sure. Where love runs out. Yeah. I think about this here. Stop and stare. I’ve heard people say that a lot. If I lose myself. If I lose myself, yeah. All the right moves. These are things that everybody loves. These are things where people burning bridges. These are famous concepts, famous ideas, and you feel like you know them. Maybe you’ve never heard the song Burning Bridges, but counting stars is something familiar. So Ryan titles those tracks? I mean, he has a very, he has a pattern where he more often than not takes a thought that people are very, very familiar with already and then uses that as a, so let’s go back to figures of speech one more time. That’s powerful. So we’ll do famous, let’s do famous figures of speech. We’ll just kind of Google that and then put list after it. So Thrivers, if you’re stuck, you’re like, I can’t think of a memorable name, I’ve been working on it all day. That’s okay. I mean, you have to start somewhere. And choosing a name, so look at this, it says, you know, this is Sally Sells Seashells. So if you named your site sallysellsseashells.com, people might remember that name. They’re blue baby bonnets. I mean, these are things that people have said before, so you might go, okay, I start to remember that. I think that people in Hollywood are getting confused and naming their kids like this. Or something. Sorry, that was a little rabbit trail. No, it’s good. I would just make sure that you definitely, if you’re going to name something memorable, make sure it is memorable. Don’t, don’t, don’t, it’s memorable to you and your unique group of people. Make it memorable to the planet. Okay? The next is make it easy to type. Yeah. Yes. Yes. So here’s the deal. We type for Elephant in the Room. Our domain name is eitrlounge.com. Why didn’t we say elephantintheroomhaircuts.com? Well, it’s a lot to type. You know? So eitrlounge.com. We even looked at like elephant.com and we just a lot of different things. But you want to make it easy to type. Stu, is there sort of a rule you have in place there for that? Well, it’s common sense. I mean, if it’s more than one word, if it gets into two, three words, just don’t pick huge words. Abbreviate, keep it short. Like you said, that’s an acronym, right? E-I-T-R, is that what that would be? Or an abbreviation? Yeah, no, I’m going to say this. I am, I know that you said it’s common sense, but there’s a Thrive right here. This is you. That was me. That was me. I said, it’s not common sense to me. So I’m glad that he said that, but I’m looking smart by saying nothing. If you’re a thriver out there and you’re watching this with your team today and your domain is crickets. I mean, you might have, we have a lot of thrivers who have domains. Tulsa mortgages in TulsaAmerican.com or they’ll say Patriotic. Tulsa Prime mortgages in Oklahoma.com. Basically if you work for the state education system in your state, you’re going to be like, oh yeah, what’s your email address, Karen? dot Edison High School dot K-12 dot OK dot US dot org. You know? And people go, you work for the city, don’t you? So what I’m saying is make sure you choose a domain that’s easy and simple. That’s the big idea here. Well, what you said is great. Do the phone test. If you had to tell somebody your email address or website over the phone. Every word you use is a potential for them to not type that incorrectly, not get the email to you, not go to the website. And the letter between the Y and the I, you know, is this with an I or with an L? And then they have to buy multiple, do they have to buy multiple Des Moines names just in case they misspell it? If your name is hard to say, definitely buy all the variations of it. But I’m saying as a general rule to cut that off right now, keep it as simple as possible. Make it as simple as possible, as few words as possible. There you go. Now the next thing here, okay, make sure, one we said make it easy to type, the next is make it short, we talked about that. Yep. Next is make sure it’s not too similar to your competition’s domain. Right. I know of a guy who did this move, which is kind of a, it’s a dirty move, but it’s a move that I sort of respect, but it’s sort of a dirty move. He basically, he didn’t buy Yo Daddy, but he bought something that’s kind of like that. And his theory was everyone knows this company and so if they type in my name I’ll be close to it. But I can’t think of an example and maybe I’m just a dense human, but I can’t think of an example where that’s gone over well. I can’t think of a company where it’s like McDonald’s. You mean McDonald’s? No, just McDonald’s. Mine is Facebook with an S. Really? Yes. Okay, see, I’m just kidding. I’m just saying is I’d make sure that you you want to make sure that it’s not too similar to your competition’s name. Otherwise, it’s not going to it’s not going to be a good thing. And so, for example, like if your domain is plural, yeah, mortgages, something mortgages and your competitors is not plural. Oh, oh, goodness. I see people do that a lot and they get they see each other and it ends up in an epic battle. So just don’t do it. Not even just the trademark component, but the fact that you’re going to be sending business to your competitor because they didn’t type an S or something like that. Oh, that’s so true. That is true. The only time where this works out well is if you’re Robin Thicke and you redo a Marvin Gaye song. You know the song, Got to Give It Up? Robin Thicke did his own variation of the song where it’s almost the exact same song, it was totally different. Or Vanilla Ice, David Bowie’s Under Pressure. If you guys get a chance to look that up, it’s hilarious. But Vanilla Ice is in court and he’s like, it wasn’t, it was more of a, and they’re sitting there in court talking like, come on dude. They’re making sounds on court. No, seriously. But anyway, he ended up losing, paying a lot of money to David Boyd, but he made millions still. But all I’m saying is, if at all possible, don’t copy this competition’s domain name. Okay, now the next thing is you want to consider buying variations of your name to protect your brand from competitors and disgruntled people. So as an example, if the name of your company was DougsBurgers.com, okay? burgers dot com so that you went through and you’re like okay make it memorable dogs burgers and i get to her and i think it’s short enough to express and you bought dogs burgers dot com you know somebody dot burger dot com doug burgers dot net did dot burgers dot is one of the inversion of that is that it is something good or not like burger dogs i mean i’d buy all of it. Yeah, D-U-G, misspelled Doug. Now, a lot of people don’t know where to… D-O-G. A lot of people ask me, where do I check to see if something is available? I recommend that you would go to godaddy.com. Right. Can you pull that up real quick? Yep. And on godaddy.com, you can just search to see if the name’s available. So let’s go ahead and type in Doug’s Burgers just for the sake of this particular… Come on, get it! And by the way, I bought MoDaddy.com too. See, you’re that scammer guy. You’re buying all the… Okay, so Doug’s Burgers, it’s available, right? Good news. Buy it right now, Jay. So you can buy it for $11.99. You can make money. And then you can buy DougsBurgers.net. If you’re a Doug out there and you want to sell burgers, good news. D-O-G and D-U-G, Doug, Doug. So I’m going to scroll down here, Clay. You’re talking about the variations, right? Yep. So you want to buy the.net, the.org, the, I don’t know if you want to buy.xyz, you want to buy.info. You want to buy all that because you are eventually going to upset a customer. What do you say about the new trend that’s coming out, which is name. and the other one without a.com,.net, like clay.clark. You know, like life.church. That’s what a lot of people are doing. Do you recommend that? Okay, so there’s like lifechurch.tv. Yeah. Well, you don’t end it with a dot com, you end it with a dot whatever. They put a dot in the middle like jason.stewart. That’s and that’s their domain name. Do you recommend people do that? No, but I would recommend that you would buy all the variations that would be. So in this case, I would recommend you’d buy dugs.burgers. I would buy, I mean, I would buy anything that you feel like somebody would want to take related to your name, I would just buy that stuff and redirect it. Makes sense. The reason why a lot of people are going with Life.Church or Life.Church.TV. Let’s pull up Life.Church.TV. They changed it to Life.Church. Really? Yep. See, Life.Church. That’s it. Cool. And I’m saying to you, I don’t have a problem. I’m not going to push back at that. I’m not going to say that’s a bad, horrible thing to do. I’m just saying that you need to, as the rules, you need to reinforce the brand name. You definitely need to emphasize your city or region. You definitely need to make it memorable. So I would argue that’s more memorable. Life.church, that’s a great idea. Make it easy to type. Again, it’s easy to type. Make it short. Great. I’d say make sure that it’s not too similar to your competition’s name. I think hopefully they’ve accomplished that. And then consider buying variations. If you can buy variations, you just don’t want somebody who’s upset to take over your cheap. Now, on to our second point here. There’s a lot of new domains, which is what you’ve been talking about. There’s a lot of new domain extensions. There’s a lot of them out there. And so a lot of thrivers want to know, should I use them? So we’re going to hop into that now. So Stu, some examples of the new ones you have is like we talked about here,.church, you’ve got.store, you’ve got.online, you’ve got.life, you’ve got.global, you’ve got.today,.guru. Why are people doing this? Tell me about why this is possible now and it wasn’t possible 10 years ago. Why couldn’t back in the day you couldn’t do this? Well, back when the web was created, no one could predict how big this medium would be. We’re talking billions of websites at this point. So the number of domain names and combinations is running out. And xyz123.com is not so intuitive. So the ones that are left don’t make sense, basically. So to try to find a.com, you have to be really creative. So expensive, that is.best. Yeah, they opened up. That’s going to be an auction. You have to buy that. Really? And we’ll get into that. But these new domain extensions are intended to give you a lot more versatility. Like you see.vegas up there, there’s.miami, there’s all kinds of them now. And so, like you were saying, they can be good, but if it’s, if you have advertising over radio or TV or something where they have to remember the name and then you type it in later, you’re asking for trouble because these are not extensions people know. If you said LifeChurch.tv or Bob’s Burgers.xyz, they may not have a clue. They’re not used to typing that. For 10 years or whatever, they’ve been typing.com. So it is a little risky if it’s not a click-based medium where they just have to click. Does that make sense? Yes. Now, as far as the domain extensions, I want to make sure we’re getting this. You can choose these different extensions. And I’m not going to sit there and say your business is going to fail if you don’t. What Jason and I are saying though is if you could buy dugsburgers.com, just do that. And then if you want to buy dugs.burgers, you know, so it’s just www.dugs.burgers, that’s okay. What we’re saying is if you’re on the bleeding edge of technology, if you’re at the very, very, very absolute forefront, usually you don’t have any success until it becomes common. So just as an example, with Thrive 15, this is just a big example, just you get what I’m saying. Thrive 15 is a place where people go to learn what they need to learn online. It’s business education. We are at the forefront of that. So you get a lot of pushback occasionally. If you try to explain to your mom and dad, you’re like, so what did you do today, Jose? And they’re like, well, I was online learning how to start my business. They’re like, so you’re at business school? And you go, no, I’m actually, I was online watching a, do you get a degree? No, I see, I own a business and I’m just trying to learn how to fix my website. So do you get a degree? No, I was just, and how much is it? It’s $19. $19,000? That’s a lot. No, no, no. So is it four years? Is it four years, Jose? No, it’s actually like 15 minutes sometimes. Why would you do that? Do you get a degree? I mean, it’s just people, they don’t get it. Now, people who have grown up with online education, maybe your mom’s not, I’m not ripping on your mom, but maybe, like, my mom doesn’t really get it. My mom’s like, so you’re on TV this morning? Were you on TV? I’m like, no, we were in a studio, and it goes on the website. So it’s like, I don’t know, I’m not sure. I’m not sure. I’m not sure. I’m not sure. I’m like, no, we were in a studio, and it goes on the website. So it’s on the web, so it’s a website. Yes. With videos and on TV. I mean, you just kind of stop it. So I’m saying when Glenn Beck left Fox and started GBTV, people began going, so it’s a website. You’re not on TV anymore. All you three are career in the toilet. So you’ve got to make sure that when you’re doing these domains, you’re not on the bleeding edge. Now, younger folks, I would honestly say people 35 and under have no problem taking online classes. But it’s just kind of a new concept for the older generation. But if it’s left to you, what I heard you say is, buy the dot-com first because everybody’s used to, for the past 10 plus years, doing dot-com. Unless you want to fight with people about what they’re used to. Right. Some people might be in a budget. So I heard you say get the dot com and then protect yourself by getting the most common ones just to have insurance. Absolutely. Protect yourself my friend. Boom. See we need the first air horn of the morning. Okay. Other items here says if you use a new extension be sure to also have a backup dot com domain. You can redirect dot com domain to your website. What we just talked about. Point number three. Why is a dot com domain better? Well, most people associate dot-com with a credible brand, to your point. Yeah, Nike or Apple, that’s what people have been hearing for years, dot-com. They’re used to that. It seems a little sketchy if you’re not a dot-com. And most people are not web savvy. So the not dot-com domains, okay, are what they’re, when people think of the dot-com, that’s what they’re used to. If it’s not dot-com, not.com they go, is this real? Is this a spider scam? Or a virus? A virus on my computer? When I hear a radio ad and it’s something plumbing and they say dot net, I go, aww. They’re just getting started. He just couldn’t, he didn’t, you know. You know what I’m saying? Yeah. It’s kind of, and again I’m not sure to be kicked in the head or something, but make sure everyone gets this. For the same reason that the e-book was a super weird idea a decade ago, that’s why this is a weird idea. Now in a decade from now, people are going to go, you remember when I used to have books? Paper hog? I never had a book. You know, so you’ve got to think about that, okay? So moving on to the next one. So are keywords in my domain important? Are they important? So Stu, we’re going to go through the kind of rules. I want you to unpack them for me, okay? So what is a key rich domain name? Names used to be important, but recently Google updates have penalized domains that are seen as too spammy. Wait a minute! You guys told us earlier that if we did Tulsa.mortgages, that was a good thing. Well, that is accurate, but let’s just give an example of something that would maybe just kind of make up one to be kind of spammy, where Google goes, hey, that’s a spammy domain, bro. You used an example earlier of a super long keyword, dense, do you know? You in New York, we’ve talked about this and we’ve had a discussion and you know what I’m not mentioning your name, but I’m saying you, whatever gender you are, because I know people can probably find you because your account, you know what I’m saying. You’ve got seven words in your domain because you feel like you’re in New York city, it’s super crowded, but you’ve chosen to go with a seven. Wow. Seven. Lucky seven, man. No, seriously, because they sell a product in New York. Oh, man. And they realize that it’s very hard for them to compete, so their thought was, I’m making up the example, but it’s like best burgers in Brooklyn, New York.com. You know what I’m saying. So back to you. And that used to be awesome. That used to be awesome. Five years ago, 10 years ago, you used to be able to rank really high, really quickly with a really keyword dense domain like that. But these days there’s a line that Google has drawn, right? And they all the time they’re updating their algorithms and the rules. Let me say this. This used to be awesome in the way, I’m just going to, I want you guys to picture this, okay? This is, here we go. Wham! It used to be awesome. Did they? And what happened was, is you would, no I mean if you were like the hot sauce boss in the 80s, you’d invite a lady over, you know, and it’s in the context of marriage, okay, so you’d invite your wife over, and she lives with you, so you just said, hey we’re going on a date tonight, but you’d kick on this song, and she would go, you are the smoothest criminal in the whole world. Do you want to make baby number six? Like, whoa, whoa, lady, I’ve got things to do. But that used to be the song that would kick start a good evening back in the day. I’m pretty sure that I was conceived to. Oh, yeah. You know what I’m saying? That used to be the thing. Having a mullet was a thing. Now you’re going, hey, I don’t want to see all the chest hair necessarily, and I don’t necessarily want the mullet. So it used to be awesome, and it’s not awesome anymore. So we’re not going to forget where we came from. I’m just saying, just don’t do old school moves that don’t work. Now, next thing, is that Google updates, they penalize some of these. But also, if you do use keywords in your domain, make sure your brand is also featured prominently in the domain, as we mentioned before. So it could be called like prime lending, TulsaMortgages.com. That can help break up that kind of spammy effect, if you have your brand in there. Does that make sense? Yeah. Spammy is just where you’re, it’s like scamming. It’s just like you’re trying to trick the world and you’re trying to play little games and don’t do it. Okay. Now, next move. Next move. How do I check if a domain is available? We talked about this just a little bit. Okay. Right. We’re going to hop into GoDaddy one more time. We’re going to look here. So we’re going to type in, I have one right now. I’m going to think of right now. Okay. Hot sauce boss.com. Hot sauce boss.com. I always tell people like, yeah, you should go to HotSauceBoss.com. Oh, he’s taking it. He’s taking it. See, that’s the thing. Okay, let me do another one. ShutTheHeckUp.com. Hey, can you go to ShutTheHeckUp.com? Sometimes we have an employee that’s being ridiculous. I’ll say, can you go to ShutTheHeckUp.com and just… You’re buying it now for $22,800. Right. Get it before somebody else gets it. Nathan, put it on my credit card over there. Shut the heck dot up. Sorry, it’s inavailable. This is how you check. I don’t want to rabbit trail, but I want to get into it. There is a man who wrote the book called Get Rich Click. Can we Google that real quick? Getrichclick.com, the author of Get Rich Click. This guy bought, back in the day, and we’ll put it up on the screen here. Jose, I want to put it up on the screen. Sure. Jose holds this accountable. Marcus Shkrovsky, he actually bought the domain. I don’t want to make it up. I don’t want to get it wrong. It was something like business.com or business. When you have a domain like that, do you make money? Oh, yeah. Yes, because people will buy it from you. So what you do, there’s people who do this. I know one gentleman I met specifically in Colorado who’s an attorney, and this guy had probably an extra $200,000 a year of income, and he thought what I’m going to do is I’m going to pull an all-nighter, probably got a glass of wine. Who knows, he might have a truck of wine. This guy gets up here and he’s just like, well, this is business, Doc. I’ll get that. Do you have any cheese? Then he gathers a glass of wine. He’s just looking for the answer. He’s just like, milk? No, that’s not milk. Cheese? Yeah, I was just thinking of things he’s eating. Steak? Get me some more wine. I’m on fire. And he’s just ordering. Wine on fire dot com. But I’m not kidding. He ends up making millions. I talk to this guy and I’m like, Brodtown, what do you do for a living? I met him at this event and I said, I met him at a professional high school. I said, I’m a professional high school student. I’m a professional high school student. I’m a professional high school student. I’m a professional high school student. I met him at this event and I said, I met him at a professional hockey game, I was sitting up in one of the luxury suites, and this guy’s like, you know, he’s the guy who’s like, fashionably late and fashionable, got like gator shoes on, super wealthy guy, no one knows what he does, he’s an attorney, and I’m like, what do you do? And he goes, oh man, well, here’s the deal, back in the day, I was in college, I had, you know, got out of school, I was in college, I thought if I had money, I would eventually, if I could get out of college and I had the money, I would actually go start buying domains. So I graduate from college and become an attorney and I’m in court all day talking about, he’s guilty, he’s not, researching, going, this sucks. So he’s like, at some point, when I have enough money, I’m going to start buying these domains. So he starts buying these domains. And I was like, what do you mean? He goes, no, I spent probably $200,000 on domains. I paid cash over probably four or five years. And he’s like, I sold one for X amount of dollars, one for. So one example, I only have one example how I’ve done this. There’s a website called Lifeshow.com. Can we go there real quick? Hopefully it’s not anything inappropriate. If it is, we just block it out. I just hope I didn’t sell it to the Libyans. And if you’re in Libya and you’re going, that was offensive. That guy could see where you’re coming from, being that you’re above the joke here. But work with me. The Libyans were the people from the Back to the Future that Dr. Brown unfortunately bought nuclear parts from, and then therefore they became… That’s where that comes from, so we’ll put it on the screen. Anyway, I sold this to a guy for, I think it was like 18 grand Wow Yeah, cuz I bought it cuz it was like a name that we made sense life show And I don’t know what that is, but we’ll just buy it Yeah, how long did it take you for you to sell it? He reached out to me. He’s probably a year later Wow, cuz what happens people reach out to you go. Hey, you want to sell your domain? I recently bought epic photos calm I just bought that for $3,600 from a some jerk who owned that if you’re a guy I bought it from, I don’t say jerk, I don’t mean jerk like. Jerk. Jerk, I mean jerk like wonderful person. With a clever idea. Who happened to take every dollar that you could get out of that name. But I did it because I own EpicPhotosTulsa.com. And I’m going, I want that name. So he bought it and Jason Bailey, one of our teammates bought it. So true deal. So you can make money doing that. Okay, so anyway, I’m always, I’m the entrepreneur. I’m always talking about how you can make some money on stuff. Okay, so also, if you go back to godaddy.com and you search the domain, Godaddy will tell you if the domain is taken, and you’ll also see alternatives based on your search. So I looked for shuttheheck.up, it says it’s not available, but you want to buy shuttheheck.com, or shuttheheck.photography, or shutourheck.com. Shut our heck. Shut the door. The good folks at yada yada yada yada and Smith Attorneys, find us online at shuttheheck.vegas. I mean, anyway, I guess that’s what you want, but it’ll kind of recommend some options for you. Now move number six, what if the domain I want is taken? Think of variations of the name. So use a website like namemesh.com to find creative alternatives. So name that right here. There you go. Might have been the worth the cost of this episode. That super move. I didn’t even know that. Well, see, we have so many super moves. Stuart has so many super moves. A lot of times it’s scary. Wow. You know, there’s like a trap door, by the way. We’re going to walk into it in a minute. We’ll never see us again. He has the super moves. Okay. So Stuart, how does this work? Yeah. So I’m going to go back to the homepage here. Check this out. So shut the heck up, right? Yep, shut the heck up. Right, so I type in those words. I didn’t type in.com or anything like that. And it gives me all these suggestions. So, shut dash, so they put dashes in between the words. Ooh. .net. Hmm. Shut the heck up with dashes.net. Yeah. .org. So it gives you all these different variations of that domain name. Let’s get serious for a second. Yeah. I have a domain, I have a website. I want to pull up a new tab real quick. It’s called Camp Clark Chicken Palace. And this site, we probably have two visitors a month. Usually I’m on there a couple times a month. I was there last week. I mean, the thing is about the site, we’ve yet to sell something, but I’m on there and hopefully it comes up here. So we’ve made it load extra slow to make it easier and more memorable. So you can enjoy it. Yeah, and this is my kids and I. We sell eggs and chickens. We don’t sell chickens. We haven’t sold any eggs, but in the future we might. But anyway, this is there, but you can scroll up here and you click on meet the ranchers. That’s my kids. And you can see we’ve got, there they are. Look at them. Oh, there they are. Okay. So let’s go here to the domains name search. We’re going, that’s too long of a name. You go, Clayton, don’t you even watch your own episodes? I do. The thing about it is that I had just put it up there to get started. Show and tell. It’s a fun way for the kids. We’re working on some stuff. When they’re a little bit older, we’ll start selling some stuff. But go ahead and Google Camp Clark. What are you going to name it when you have more goats and more goats and sheep? And then put Chicken Palace. Ducks? And this is going to tell me what’s available or what? How does this works do? Oh, man. Everything you see here is available. Really? So common, the green, those are those common domains we’re talking about, easy to type. You get into new, that’s like the club, guru, dot today, dot rocks. You see that? Can you do Camp Clark? Just look for that real quick. Yep. Oh, man. Let’s see if we can do it. Is campclark.net available? It is. Nathan, buy it from me. Oh, man. I’m going to sell it to Clay. I’m going to make some money. He’s talking to our producer in there. Okay, but anyway, this helps you through the process, right? And this is how it works. So anyway, Thrivers, if you need help, go to NameMesh.com. This will help you out. It’s a great deal. This is better than calling our customer service team, because they’re like, I don’t know, but.biscuit. I mean, is this… But biscuit. I’m just, whatever. I mean, so anyway, let’s say it is. Now, do you own the trademark on your name? If so, you might have legal rights to the domain name. Now let’s talk about that real fast, without getting too legal, what does that mean? Yeah, so if you own a trademark for your domain, like Madonna.com, right, or whatever, if you’re a major brand, and you, if someone buys that domain name, right, and you own the trademark, call your attorney, and there are mitigating organizations out there, like ICANN, I-C-A-N-N, that can regulate your way through that. You can get your domain back. And if they don’t give it to you, then you can go through a lawsuit. What if you own it? How do you get a trademark? Okay, well, let’s talk about this. I want to make sure we don’t get way out here. Trademarking your name is crazy expensive. You’re going to spend at least three Gs on trademarking your name. Furthermore, if you already own your name and someone takes your name, to get it back, I bet you’re going to drop like… I’ve seen it historically cost 7 to 10 grand before you even get into the conversation about maybe getting it back. Yeah, it’s got to really be worth it. So if you’re like a big… If you’re like Jiffy Lube and some idiot steals Jiffy Lube’s and you’re like, that’s it! And you own the trademark, then that’s where you would go after it. But if you’re opening a bakery, your name’s Sally, it’s Sally’s Bakery, and you haven’t even sold any muffins yet, and biscuits, and you haven’t sold anything yet, and then somebody takes it, just move on to another name, because you really don’t want to spend all your money and resources there. I just want to make sure we don’t, you know, I’m all about making some money. Now, next move. Should I buy from a domain squatter? Which I have been one now, I told you with Life Show, and I have had to buy from them as well well one is yet to expect to pay out how much is that what’s the most you’ve ever paid for them is it thirty six and we are talking about it dark places no i thought i i i have uh… music i have definitely paid a lot i i think uh… just this week the thirty six hundred dollars for epic photos. I mean, I have paid a lot. I’d just say maybe $10,000. But it was worth it, right? No, it was not worth it. Uh-oh. No. I wouldn’t do it again. I was upset about it. Everyone has different philosophies about just business, but I have found that the best business people I know get all the facts and then they act. Say that again. The best business people get all the facts and they act. I find that the most unsuccessful people talk about emotion and then that drives the motion. What happened was I was in a company, I was not the majority owner, and a bunch of people talked and they were like, if we get this domain it will be huge because people will remember it. Well, first off, no one is going to make a ton of money because of their domain being memorable. So as an example, people use Google, yes, it’s memorable, but it also works well. People use GoDaddy because it’s memorable, yes, but they advertise the heck out of it. If you remember, Danica Patrick was like the person of, see the rest of this commercial at GoDaddy.com. So these people were in a room, very limited marketing budget, I’m a small owner, and this guy’s like, if we do this domain, this will change everything. I was like, I disagree. They bought the domain, spent a bunch of money, rest is story. Here we go. Oh yeah, come on. Here it is, all the way down here. Let’s just say at the end of it, when all the smoke cleared, I ended up taking over the company, choosing a domain that I wanted, and I’ll call myself Butthead so I can refer to myself in third person. Butthead one. Let’s just say that, okay? All right, so next thing, okay? So yeah, you’re going to buy from a domain squad. You should definitely expect to have to negotiate the price. And you’ve got to make sure they’re reputable before you pay these people. So the best thing you could do is if you go to GoDaddy.com as an example again, and we’re going to go to GoDaddy.com, we’re going to go ahead and type in CampClark.com. And they’re saying, it is definitely not available steve what if i wanted to find who owns it make them an offer how do i get of the city territory let’s go to the little bit of a victim okay u at people are wanting to know how do i do it okay there is a website called who dot i s who dot is who dot is who is what what that is is literally who is who is the owner of this domain is essentially what that is so i’m gonna type in to camp clark is a reason to camp clark who’s there Clark is that what you’re saying? Who is that? Okay, so what you can do is scroll down here on this first tab and look at the registrar data. See this right here where it says registrar domain name dot com? Yep. You can begin, it takes a little bit of work, but you can eventually find the owner of this domain. What are the next steps? I know this is another episode, but what do I need? What are the next steps so I can at least get started in my rabbit trail of dysfunction to buy this name no matter what the cost It gets super complicated, but I’ll say this go daddy is essentially brokering this domain Okay, so you could buy it through go daddy how? Yeah, hit select right there the green button. Okay, I’ll add it to your cart you pull out a credit card and bam there you Go $2,195 I could have it right now. It’s a decent chunk. Yeah, so that is a broker They’re brokering it, but it may not be owned by GoDaddy. It’s probably owned by another company out of Hong Kong, out of Asia. I mean, this is common. You’re buying it from a squatter. Yes. And a squatter is a person who has bought a bunch of domains. Back in the day, a squatter used to buy a bunch of land and would just sit on it. There’s a guy, you know the building next to our old Thrive office? Yeah. 1609 South Boston. Yeah. Thrivers, you know, we used to office out of a bunker, one of those nerve center of some of my businesses. It was a neat building we retrofitted. But if you type in 1609 South Boston in Tulsa, you can see it on Google Earth. The guy who bought the property next to us, he’s a notorious squatter in Tulsa. Really? No, true story. He would just go around and buy properties and he would just let them sit and just get nasty. There would be like a rodent. Eventually what happens is like a rat would sneak in and there’s gonna be like a dog in there and there’ll be something else and you’re not really sure what happened but something mated and all of a sudden like there’s like a chupacabra that’s in there. Oh chupacabra. Do you remember that? Can you say it again? Chupacabra. Oh that sounds good. Chupacabra. Chupacabra. Yeah absolutely something happens and you get in there and it’s and I’m not saying it was rowdy. Remember that building next to us? Oh yeah. Rowdy and you’re like what is there people in there? And he’s thinking probably and it drives up, because eventually the people around him are like, knock down that building. He’s like, for a price. And so that’s his whole move. He just buys properties next to nice buildings and just lets them get destroyed. And there’s a lot of people that do that. They just buy these domains. And that’s a move. That’s a super move. Hello, I’m Michael Levine and I’m talking to you right now from the center of Hollywood, California, where I have represented over the last 35 years 58 Academy Award winners, 34 Grammy Award winners, 43 New York Times bestsellers. I’ve represented a lot of major stars and I’ve worked with a lot of major companies. And I think I’ve learned a few things about what makes them work and what makes them not work. Now, why would a man living in Hollywood, California, in the beautiful sunny weather of LA, come to Tulsa? Because last year I did it and it was damn exciting. Clay Clark has put together an exceptional presentation, really life-changing, and I’m looking forward to seeing you then. I’m Michael Levine. I’ll see you in Tulsa. Thrive Time Show two-day interactive business workshops are the world’s highest rated and most reviewed business workshops because we teach you what you need to know to grow. You can learn the proven 13-point business system that Dr. Zellner and I have used over and over to start and grow successful companies. We get into the specifics, the specific steps on what you need to do to optimize your website. We’re going to teach you how to fix your conversion rate. We’re going to teach you how to do a social media marketing campaign that works. How do you raise capital? How do you get a small business loan? We teach you everything you need to know here during a two-day, 15-hour workshop. It’s all here for you. You work every day in your business, but for two days you can escape and work on your business and build these proven systems so now you can have a successful company that will produce both the time freedom and the financial freedom that you deserve. You’re going to leave energized, motivated, but you’re also going to leave empowered. The reason why I built these workshops is because as an entrepreneur I always wish that I had this, and because there wasn’t anything like this, I would go to these motivational seminars, no money down, real estate, Ponzi scheme, get motivated seminars, and they would never teach me anything. It was like you went there and you paid for the big chocolate Easter bunny, but inside of it, it was a hollow nothingness. And I wanted the knowledge, and they’re like, oh, but we’ll teach you the knowledge after our next workshop. And the great thing is we have nothing to upsell. At every workshop, we teach you what you need to know. There’s no one in the back of the room trying to sell you some next big get rich quick, walk on hot coals product. It’s literally, we teach you the brass tacks, the specific stuff that you need to know to learn how to start and grow a business. I encourage you to not believe what I’m saying, but I want you to Google the Z66 auto auction. I want you to Google elephant in the room. Look at Robert, Zellner, and Associates. Look them up and say, are they successful because they’re geniuses? Or are they successful because they have a proven system? When you do that research, you will discover that the same systems that we use in our own business can be used in your business. Come to Tulsa, book a ticket, and I guarantee you it’s going to be the best business workshop ever, and we’ll even give you your money back if you don’t love it. We’ve built this facility for you, and we’re excited to see you. And now you may be thinking, what does it actually cost to attend an in-person two-day interactive Thrive Time Show business workshop? Well, good news, the tickets are $250 or whatever price that you can afford. What? Yes, they’re $250 or whatever price you can afford. I grew up without money and I know what it’s like to live without money, so if you’re out there today and you want to attend our in-person, two-day, interactive business workshop. I learned at the Academy in Kings Point, New York, acta non verba. Watch what a person does, not what they say. Good morning, good morning, good morning. Harvard Kiyosaki, The Rich Dad Radio Show. Today I’m broadcasting from Phoenix, Arizona, not Scottsdale, Arizona. They’re close, but they’re completely different worlds. And I have a special guest today. Definition of intelligence is if you agree with me, you’re intelligent. And so this gentleman is very intelligent. I’ve done this show before also, but very seldom do you find somebody who lines up on all counts as Mr. Clay Clark, he’s a friend of a good friend, Eric Trump, but we’re also talking about money, bricks, and how screwed up the world can get in a few and a half hour. So Clay Clark is a very intelligent man and there’s so many ways But I thought since you and Eric are close Trump What were you saying about what Trump can’t what Donald who’s my age and I can say or cannot say? First of all, I have to honor you sir. I want to show you what I did to one of your books here There’s a name of Jeremy Thorne who was my boss at the time. I was 19 years old working at Faith Highway I had a job at Applebee’s Target and DirecTV and he said have you read this book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad? And I said, no. And my father, may he rest in peace, he didn’t know these financial principles. So I started reading all of your books and really devouring your books. And I went from being an employee to self-employed to the business owner, to the investor. And I owe a lot of that to you. And I just wanted to take a moment to tell you, thank you so much for allowing me to achieve success. And I’ll tell you all about Eric Trump. I just want to tell you, thank you, sir, for changing my life. Well, not only that, Clay, you know, thank you, but you’ve become an influencer. You know, more than anything else, you’ve evolved into an influencer where your word has more and more power. So that’s why I congratulate you on becoming, because as you know, there’s a lot of fake influencers out there too, or bad influencers. Anyway, I’m glad you and I agree so much and thanks for reading my books. Yeah. That’s the greatest thrill for me today. Not thrill, but recognition is when people, young men especially, come up and say, I read your book, changed my life, I’m doing this, I’m doing this, I’m doing this.
